Suddenly getting hot red face after wine

Last three times I’ve had wine my face has burnt up and gone red. Could it be an intolerance??!

Watching with interest as this has been happening to me. Not stopping me thoughGrin

Sounds like acetaldehyde build up. You're not metabolising the alcohol fast enough. Could be congeners though (was it red wine?).

I've always had this.

Newname9 · 24/12/2019 09:11

No white wine - I’m think I’ll give it a break after Christmas and see what happens

How old are you, OP? I’m 47, and have only had this happen in the last year or so.

Newname9 · 24/12/2019 09:16

I’m 36 - literally was fine last week!

I haven't drunk in a very long time, over a year. I had 2 glasses of prosecco at the weekend and got a hot red rash all over my face, neck and chest. I was also wondering if this was an intolerance. I'm 29.

ringme · 24/12/2019 09:19

Same. It’s onset of alcohol I intolerance. As our bodies and organs age we can’t breakdown certain substances as effectively. I’ve experimented with different kinds of alcohol to see what I’m intolerant to. You may be able to find a different tipple that you don’t react to OP.

Canadianpancake · 24/12/2019 09:20

This happens to me. It used to be less noticeable and only with specific alcoholic drinks, but now I struggle to find one that doesn't cause it. But I've found that taking an antihistamine when I'm going to have a drink helps.

supercee · 24/12/2019 09:24

This happened to me about a month ago after drinking white wine. Red blotches on my face. I'm 37. Hasn't stopped me since though Blush

amaryl · 24/12/2019 09:29

I’d forgotten I used to get this all the time!
But then I used to drink a lot
I stopped drinking white wine in the pub, then just drank it with dinner. Now, I have the odd glass.
Just doesn’t agree with me, instant headaches sometimes too.

Newname9 · 24/12/2019 09:30

Seems quite common then - I was worried it was a terrible sign my liver was packing up!

I thought it was something to do with an increase in blood pressure, or the effect of the alcohol dilating blood vessels.

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/12/2019 09:33

I get this with certain types of wine and not others, I seem to be OK with a Pinot Grigio or prosecco but can't remember which wines have made me flush. I don't drink wine very often, though, I prefer a G&T which gives me no ill effects.

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/12/2019 09:33

White wine keeps me awake at night, though.

Northernsoullover · 24/12/2019 09:38

Alcohol affects a lot more than your liver Wink.

Raildolly · 24/12/2019 09:41

I get this, I call it wine blush 😆

TitchyP · 24/12/2019 09:52

Seems to perhaps be an age thing. I have also recently (late 40s) developed a weird intolerance to white wine. Instant headache, feeling hungover on even a quarter of a glass. I now stick to red which seems fine!

MinesaPinot · 26/12/2019 22:29

I get this occasionally when I drink Merlot! Only started about 3 years ago. All very strange xxx

ContessaLovesTheSunshine · 26/12/2019 22:31

I get this every day after lunch or a cup of tea - no wine is involved! I thought maybe it was a blood sugar thing.

ShirleyPhallus · 26/12/2019 22:35

I get this from cheap wine that has sulphites in it. Added bonus of an almost immediate headache.

Organic wine seems to be fine, as are clear spirits

RandomUsernameHere · 26/12/2019 22:37

My friend had this, also with white wine, she was allergic to sulphites

YearofMisAdventure · 27/12/2019 03:36

It's due to histamine I think.

What does help with alcohol intolerance is milk thistle before bed Grin. Many a hangover reduced.
