My little girl, who is toilet trained, is often a bit "smelly", its not an unusual smell if you see what i mean, probably a mix of wee and sweat (what a lovely conversation), but Im worried it could be something else, she doesnt wee very often at all, she has got up this morning with a dry nappy and still hasnt had a wee. She's a bit red there too. Is this normal and what else other than washing can I do to help. Am about to put some cream on ....if she will let me. Theres no discharge that I have seen either.

Pepsi, I would get her to the doctor's today. This may be a water infection, or it may be an infection or soreness of the vulva which is making her reluctant to wee. You can use a barrier cream or Canesten HC which may relieve the soreness, but I really would get her checked out by your GP.

Is it normal though for some children just not to wee very often, she hasnt been since yesterday at about 6.30 pm.

I wouldn't say that was normal, no, not if she's taking plenty of fluids and normally wees more often than this. Please take her to see the doctor.

She doesnt drink a lot at all and never has done, she doesnt wee a lot normally, when we were potty training she picked it up so easily, I think because she didnt go that often, 3 or 4 times a day max normally.

I would be very concerned if my dd hadn't had a wee since 6.30 last night and was red and smelly down below. My dd does suffer with a sore vulva, she has a little fissure there, and I do use Canesten HC on the doctor's recommendation but in your position I would still want to see a doctor. Can you ring them and have a chat about it? Some doctors will let you do this. Or ring your health visitor.

I would still be inclined to take her to the doctors.

Called doctors and spoke to HV, since doing so though she doesnt seem smelly at all so I think it might have just been a coincidence. Ive really been keeping an eye on her drinking and weeing and Im not too worried now. Redness has gone as well. Should I still get her checked out....cant see what symptons a Doctor would see now. Batters what does it mean when you say UTI became full blown, what are the symptons of that.

Pepsi - with young children I don't think you can ever be too careful. A quick appointment with the doctor will soon put your mind at rest. If your dd does have an infection of some sort the gp will be able to sort it out with some cream/medication quite quickly! HTH

pepsi · 01/10/2004 20:44

Yes but how will he be able to tell now that the redness has gone away and she is not smelly?

Maybe have to take a swab of some kind. I'm not sure TBH but there must be some way they can tell.

I'll phone the docs agains on Monday then I think. I take it if an infection took hold she would have a temperature and be generally unwell. She is totally fine and full of beans. Im thinking thats it probably just sweating and dribbles of wee maybe coupled with wearing more clothes now that its getting colder, either way I need to get it sorted dont I so I know once and for all. My gut feeling now though is that she is fine.

Just a note to say we took a sample of my dd's pee to the doctors, it had a very small trace of protein but no infection detected, so Im still none the wiser, I guess she just sometimes gets smelly down there.
