DS1 had a very bad headache/migraine y'day and spent most of the day asleep. kpet him does up with calpol and ibuprofen and cold flannels to brng his temp down. brightened up today and playedin the garden and managed quite a big tea.

Since going to bed though he has whimpered aaaaallll night (since 7). he says his throat is sore and now he has earache. he is again does up on calpol but we have no ibuprofen left. what can i do to help him so he goes to sleep? which will inturn help me because whimpering is top of the list of irritations and i know its not his fault.

Hes not due any calpol for another 3 hours...

Now, this is an old cure, but i used to have it used on me when i was little and still use it now! If you've got some olive oil in kitchen, warm a teaspoon up (and i do mean warm : not hot!) and trickle it into ds's ear, pop some on cotton wool and 'plug up' his ea, and get him to lie on side so oil will trickle down the ear. It won't get rid of the underlying infection / cause of pain but it will temp. stop pain, for abot a night so you can whizz him to docs!

MerlinsBeard · 24/08/2007 22:51

really? will that work? will he not scream as it goes down his ear? what about the cotton wool...will it get stuck in his ear in little stringy bits?

hes convienently got earache when the DRs are shut until MOnday! i don't think its anything other than a virus tbh.

No, olive oil is 'liquidy' anyway, so it goes even liquidy-er (?!) when you warm it up. It's quite a pleasant tickly sensation when you pour it down the ear, it just depends how much of a tizz your ds will be in, coz i get earaches loads and they do make me have a good sob with pain. If you just tear off a little bit of cotton wool to pop in his ear (as though you didn't want water to get in when you go swimming) bt dab a bit of oil on, then it should be fine (my mum did thi so often to me that by time i was 11 i used ti get up in night and just sort my own lugs out!) You just ,ight want to make sure your ds falls asleep, or at least spends some time onhis side to make sure oil will travel right down his ear and settle there. Ear shoupd eventually just get rid of oil, but is definately gets rid of my earaches.

Test heat of oil on your wrist so it's not too warm: t must be just warm: tender ears will find too warm oil very tender, prob go for a little bit above lukewarm.

I would consider out of hours doctor tbh. I remember having horrid earache as a child and ended up with perforated eardrum.

DS gets lots of bouts of tonsillits (to have them out soon) and understand how hard it is when they are in pain. Def seek medical help.

i haven;t any cotton wool (bloody typical) if i rip up a cotton wool pad will that do the same job?

Awen, they won't come out to us because of where we live. apparently its not safe to access our house at night. quite right, its pitchblack and you need to go down a gravel path to get here.

There is a 24 hour DRs but i would need to get ds2 up as well and then get the bus there as DP is out gigging.

i just need something to get us thru tonight and then 2mo can get him seen(hopefully) by emergancy Dr

Anything that will soak up liquid and let you 'mould' it into an area! Maybe even cut a little bit off a clean flannel or towel or somthing similar soft? Anything that fits that description and you can dip n the oil so it will soak it up and act like a plug and that will be comfy in your ds's ear!

MerlinsBeard · 24/08/2007 23:05

thx walbert. i will go and do it now.

ty for your help too awen

But yep, cotton wool pad ripped up should be fab: as per your prev post, should tide you over till tomorrow and through part of daytime so yopu have plenty time to get to docs.

Advice from DP who has had cronic ear problems all his life
I would be careful inserting anything into the ear canal. My DP has had ear problems all his life and he suggests a warm flannel placed against the ear. Apparantly it is quite common for the ear drum to 'burst' under the age of 11 and if it does the act of putting forreign objects in to block it can cause the gloop to drip into the eustacian tube and potentially spread infection into the throat. Also the gloop needs to come out and restricting it from it's natural path isn't a good idea, worse case scenario could be the ear drum failing to heal correctly and the onset of a cholesteatoma, dp has just had one removed which was possibly caused from childhood ear infections and damage to the ear drum.

oh god clairejo what a scary post! tbh sometimes with DS1 its hard to tell if he has earache or a sore throat because of wher it says it hurts.

I googled and it kept on coming up with the warm olive oil thing.

I warmed a bit up and put a tiny trickle down his ear, then loosly put some cotton wool in and it helped him enough to settle. He woke this morning shouting at his bro as usual and seems a LOT better. will kep up the calpol and have now got ibuprofen as well in case calpol doesn't shift it.
