Do you have to be in their environment?

I've been a carer for a family member for over two years now and I've tried to make them give up smoking with subtle hints but to no avail. I've never smoked a cigarette or anything in my life (56 years) but it's now beginning to get to me.

My parents both smoked but gave up later in life and my husband smoked cigars until I made him give up 30 years ago so I'm well aware of other peoples smoking habits.

I've now been a carer of a family member for over two years but they are still smoking lots every day and family members are also smoking lots in the same space so of course I am exposed to all this.

I sort of was used to it at first but now it's beginning to get to me, especially as family members are leaving lots of fag buts everywhere for me to clear up.

As I'm committed to being a carer for my family member i.e. I receive the carer's benefit of £66 per week just wondering if I should confront other close family members about their smoking habits?

Well I wouldn't be able to be in that atmosphere so I would try anything to try and avoid it to be honest, is there someone else who can take over care duties? You can ask other family members not to smoke around you but I think it is tricky concerning the person you're caring for as presumably they're in their own home?

Maybe suggest they try vaping and say that for the sake of you're own health you're going to have to give up your caring position if they continue to smoke?

Thanks so much for your advice MyKingdom. I'm going to try to ask other family members not to smoke in the environment but I know it's going to be a bit awkward with one of them as they live with the family member I'm committed to caring for.

I know the family member wouldn't be able to cope without my interaction every day so it's very hard to try to take a step back.
