Hi my SIL has a DS 2yrs and I have a newborn DD (2 and half weeks)! We haven't seen SIL and her DS her 5 weeks now, she will be visiting MIL this weekend, we always see IL's at the week end but I feel we should give it a miss this weekend due to SIL's DS has "Chicken Pox" and I dont want my DD to get them at this age my 2DS's have already had them, but I wanted to ask weather my DD can still catch them from other people and item's that have come in contact with SIL's DS? When is the safe time that DD will not catch them from others? And can other still carry them and not know it?
Thanks Bbaymadx

No you can't catch by proxy , only direct proximity with contagious person (virus is airborne) and latest research suggests only within 5 days of onset of spots and up to 2 dyas beforehand. so if you dn is recovering after those 5 day he probably isnlt contagious . You can incubate the virus (if not had it before or unusally a 2nd or more times) for up to 3 weeks but would only be unwittingly contagoious for those 2 dyas prior to the spots coming out.

So my DD will will only get it if she comes in contact with DN?

Wouldn't your antibodies protect DD if you're bfeeding?
I thought you had to wait until spots had scabbed over to no longer be infectious, but I may be mistaken.

Think chickenpox is very dangerous for newborns. Best stay away. Sorry.

lemonaid · 24/08/2007 15:54

Old theory = until scabbed over. New theory = 5 days, but I'd personally be inclined to err on the side of safety and go for the scabbed over option.

Your antibodies will give some protection if breastfeeding, but it's not 100% effective -- I know exclusively breastfed newborns who've caught it.

It's only your DN you need to worry about (assuming that everyone else in the family has had it already).

Dd2 came down with chickenpox the day ds was born (at home) so I did look into it all rather frantically - apparently newborn babies do have good immunity against chickenpox for at least a month - providing you have had chickenpox yourself.
Ds was absolutely fine - despite being in v. close contact with dd2 from day 0 as I ended up cuddling them both almost all the time until dd2 was better.

(only 'side effect' we had was that I can't really remember ds's first two weeks - I just remember the horrendous case of chickenpox poor dd2 had )

How many days from getting chicken pox and braking out in the spots? Not B/F sorry I wished I was but didn't work out! I don't intend to take my DD any where near DN but just want to 100% sure on fact's IYSWIM, also how long does chicken last for normally from braking out in spots till all spots have scabbed over?

BabyMad it can take from 10 days to 3 weeks to incubate c'pox but you are only contagious form up to 2 days prior to spots until about 5 days after. Personally I'd allow 5 days from last spot appearing but NHS advice contradicts this saying 5 days from first.

BabyMadandBIGbump · 24/08/2007 16:38

Thanks very much ladies, I will ask D-SIL when DN first broke out in the c'pox so that I can be sure DD stay's as safe as possable! But I'm sure I'll be giving IL's a miss this weekend any way just to be on the extra safe side! Again many thanks!
