TMI mucous in stool - antibiotics or something else?

Sorry this could be long... I gave birth 6 weeks ago and had a few problems with my stitches. I first went back to hospital one week post birth and was given a weeks course of metronidazole. When I went back a week later for a further check I was then given a weeks course of cefalexin and fluoxetine. Post birth I completely lost my appetite, I don’t think helped by all the antibiotics and so whilst taking them I was eating very little (stupid I realise now, but running round after everyone including tiny baby I just forgot really!). During this time however my bowels seemed fine. However, about 5 days after stopping the second course I had a stomach upset - watery diarrhoea whenever I went and stomach cramps for about 4 days. Again things returned to normal, but about 4 days after that I started having tummy cramps again and passing big clumps of mucous (mostly yellow but with some pinky brown blood mixed in). I went straight to the GP who did full blood count and MCS stool culture, all of which has come back normal. I had a bit of a wake up call with my diet and started eating properly again from the day I went to the GP and have been drinking Yakult and eating activia yogurts to try and help. I have also ordered a better probiotic.

Things seemed to return to normal again until yesterday when I’ve started up with the blobs of mucous again. This time the stomach cramps are less and bowel movements relatively normal apart from the mucous but more frequent than normal.

I’ve got the 6 week check at the GP on Tuesday so will push for more tests then, but in the meantime I’m worrying myself stupid that it could be more sinister than my gut reacting to the antibiotics. Google is not my friend!

Has anyone had anything like this? Can be the voice of reason until Tuesday? Sad

I had bowel issues after suffering acute pancreatitis- including the kinds you have described. The consultant told me that if you have loose poos and go to the toilet lots, the food passes over the surface of the bowel much more often and can remove a protective layer. The bowel them produces the mucous to try to protect its surface. He said if we could calm the bowel down it would put itself right. It did.

This can also be caused by piles

Thanks for the replies. @LuluJakey1 do you remember how long it took yours to sort itself out? The GP wants me to wait another 2 weeks and see if it settles. It has stopped again currently but am nervous of another flare up!

She suggested it may be proctitis caused by the antibiotics and the symptoms do seem to fit.
