DIARRHOEA

my son is a year old and has bad diarrhoea. I think it's due to teething as he still is eating well,is there any thing in liquid form he can take, as he will not take dioralyte.

try ice cubes/ice lollies

If he is eating OK Musa, just make sure he takes plenty of extra fluids - water, milk, dilute "full-fat" (ie, not low cal) squash is almost as good as Dioralyte. I don't know why they sell this stuff to parents, I've never met a baby who'd drink it.
If it goes on for any longer than 48 hours, take him to the GP to get him checked. They can prescribe Imodium for toddlers apparently, but only do so with caution.
I have to say that although teething has sometimes made my children a bit loose, I would never have described the results as bad diarrhoea.
Hope he feels better soon. Yucky, isn't it.

Apparently they're not supposed to have dialoryte under 2, I was told by NHS Direct recently.

MTS · 28/09/2004 15:33

thats interesting MI. Does it contain too much salt for under 2s?

motherinferior · 28/09/2004 15:34

Don't know, I'm afraid. It was one of those frustrating conversations with NHS direct when they ask you how you think the baby is and you say 'well, I'm not sure, actually, that's why I rang you'.

MTS · 28/09/2004 15:36

oh yes MI, i know the one. me and my friends ended up phoning NHS Direct the evening of my wedding - one of the guests had drunk wine, ate lots of carnations, vomited lots, then disappeared off to go home. We wanted to know if carnations were poisonous (as if he was in danger we would have called 999 and told the police to look out for him!). We were told - well if you are worried about your friend, tell him to go to A & E!

My HV recommended cooled, boiled lemonade (not the low cal versions). It replaces sugars as well as fluids, and she reckoned it's better for little ones than Diarolyte. The recommendation was definitely for a 1 year old, because the occasion was my dd's first birthday (oh, I remember it well ...)

No advice, just congratulations on spelling diarrhoea correctly! Hope ds feels better soon.
