I'm looking at my Mooncup in its box and thinking...

...it seems like a good idea, but can I do it? DH made me laugh when he commented on the fact that Mooncup users must be weird and that he loved the way they 'dressed it up in a bag with pink ribbon'. Looking at it in the flesh scares me a bit. Did you users out there practice before using it for real?

Where can you buy these mooncups from then?

milkymill · 23/08/2007 18:57

Nobiggy - Ah, i've just noticed the different colour coding for different sizes on the box. I'm sure i've got size A though, they must have given me the wrong bag.

I lose heavily and the cramping is much less noticable with the MC than with pads.

I like the fact that i can't feel the clots falling like before.

Have been scuba diving, flying and on safari using it and it is fantastic, over 2.5yrs now.

I still use panty liners as have a overflow leak sometimes as lose 2-3 x the average

MatNanPlus · 23/08/2007 19:32

gordieracer, my local boots does them.

Also available online from mooncup site

hellobello · 23/08/2007 19:37

WEll I must be the odd one out here. I've got one and used it for the first time. It's messy, uncomfortable, and I've got an infection which is horrible. I don't know if theyr'e connected, but there's something really wrong. At the moment I loathe this disgusting Mooncup thing. Yuck. I haven't had an infection since I gave birth.

Perhaps it's just unfortuntate but at the moment I feel like throwing the bloody thing away.

nanninurse · 23/08/2007 19:40

Bodykind.com

have them on offer £15 something with free delivery..

mawbroon · 23/08/2007 19:45

Expat, don't you mean you're so glad you stuck it in. [mustn't laugh at own jokes emoticon]

MatNanPlus · 23/08/2007 19:50

hellobello

sorry your having a bad time.

Re messy: if it doesn't unfurl fully then it can't make a seal so there is leakage, easiest way of checking for seal is to rotate mc.

Infection: they are made from medical grade silicon like heart valves and baby teats so unless not washed properly hard for it to be the cause, maybe your technique needs a tweak?

Uncomfortable:If the mc isn't in far enough it can press on the inner labia and the stem if not trimmed can also rub causing discomfort.

GodzillasBumcheek · 24/08/2007 21:50

Lol...made the mistake of mentioning what mooncup is to dh

'That's disgusting', he said, so i told him i didn't think it was any more disgusting than tampons which just sponge up all the blood and feel gross and uncomfortable, or pads which stink to heck and smear blood all over your pubes...

I had forgotten the ten year old girls who were also in the room at the time

Told them i was exaggerating to gross Daddy out

yogabird · 24/08/2007 22:00

mine is soooo very fab! Glad i got it, thanks to FrannyandZooey and her constant PR on threads for making me think to try it

Pickie · 24/08/2007 22:11

Love it, makes a period so much easier!

Cant rave enough about it. No more cramps and very comfortable.

Skyler · 24/08/2007 22:17

I have had to keep all my stem. I am a real fan though. My periods seem much easier, shorter and I have no more cramps! I wouldn't have believed it before I tried it. Fantastic invention and I always felt guilty flushing tampons away, YUK.

wishingmummy · 24/08/2007 22:24

this sounds interesting- does it really work .what about heavy periods and swimming?

mawbroon · 24/08/2007 22:41

If it's in right then swimming shouldn't pose a problem at all. Likewise with heavy periods.

MatNanPlus · 25/08/2007 01:27

Makes heavy periods much easier wishingmummy and i have scuba'd in mine to 30 mts below with no leakages.

Tampons are thought to absorb the natural secretions as well as the loss hence the lack of cramping when using a mc.

Budababe · 25/08/2007 07:34

Well I think you lot may have convinced me to try one! Will have a look in Dublin this week and if not will order on line. Wonder if it will get past customs in Hungary?????

chinwag · 25/08/2007 07:40

What about cleaning it?

DettaJnr · 25/08/2007 08:53

Budababe, I bought mine in Boots in Jervis Street Centre. 30 euro. I have never looked back.

Budababe · 25/08/2007 10:52

Thanks Detta - will head there then!

ZoeC · 25/08/2007 11:32

cleaning - sterilise it for five minutes in boiling water between cycles. A rinse is fine each time you empty it, obviouly then a proper wash after your cycle is finished.

MatNanPlus · 25/08/2007 11:32

chinwag, if able you rinse it when you empty it, if in public you can just wipe with paper.

I give mine a good wash each morning and leave it for 10 minutes in a milton solution at the end of my cycle then let it air dry and pack into it's bag until the next time, some boil theirs and other put it in the dishwasher after rinsing it out.

chinwag · 25/08/2007 12:12

Ewwww. Dishwasher???

mawbroon · 25/08/2007 12:51

Hmm, it does say in the leaflet not to put it in the dishwasher though. I'm not sure why but perhaps the dishwasher detergent perishes the rubber or could cause fanjo-itis.

tribpot · 25/08/2007 12:51

I'm still struggling with mine. Sigh. It seems always to leak. And last period I put it in and immediately had really horrific cramps (I'm assuming that's just a coincidence but hey ho). The first cycle it was good but since then I've had problems. Cleaning it at work is a real hassle and I find that on the heaviest days the flow is so heavy I can't get the thing out and back in fast enough, if you know what I mean.
