Anyone had tonsillitis as an adult?

I've have had it a few times, mostly when I was younger.
I've got it now, but this is nasty. I have been constantly sore since Saturday. I can't sleep, I can't eat, can't drink.
They don't prescribe antibiotics for this now (unless I become iller) just strong analgesics, which still seem to be pretty ineffctive if you ask me.
Worst thing is, I had assumed it would be all over in a few days but apparently it can go on for THREE months!!!

Can anyone who has had this tell me how they dealt with it?

Thanks

I started my first ever bout on Boxing Day. Can honestly say that I have never felt so ill. Temperature/razor blades swallowing and massive white lumps on the tonsils.

Started with temp and just soreness and red inflamed tonsials. Rang NHS direct who said if not white spots, was not worth ab's. Following day, massive whit lumps so saw GP and got antibiotics, and then started to recover.

Was seriously wiped out for about a week, and knackered for sometime after.

Mentioned that I still sometimes feel like I have a lump when swallowing (last week) and the GP said that I had slightly more "juicy" (his word) left tonsil and that may have smoe scarring/pitting as a result of the tonsilitis at Christmas

Things I found most helpful: soluble paracetomol. Hurt like hell drinking it, but suppose helped to keep fluids up and temp down (though the temp only went after had had 2 days of abs).
I ended up forcing down banana milkshake made with icecream.

Apart from that the best thing was dh happened to be more or less off as was at its worst between Xmas and NY, so he removed the children every day for most of the day while I just slept.

Hope you feel better soon.

Many times and it is vile , but always had ab's. Once I had bacterial for ten days then viral almost immediately with hives in between - nice, NOT! Anaesthetic, antiseptic throat sprays are great for numbing the pain and powerful throat lozenges (Dequacaine , Merocaine et al). I now use both at the first signs. Hope you feel better soon.

Well the GP has just phoned me this evening to say that the results are back. I have a hemolytic strep infection.
She said the antibiotics will be ready for me to pick up in the morning.

Am so pleased you finally have the treatment you need - just wish for your sake you'd got them earlier. You'll be feeling better soon. xxx
