Mole removal

Hi all,
I had a mole removed on my back (mid back to the right), today for a biopsy. It was years old, pigmented and used to stand up off my back. Just over 1cm x half a cm, it was round for years but has spread at the base making it more oval in shape, with very uneven edges. It's soft to the touch.
The decision was made by a dermatologist at the hospital to remove it.
On the day of my appointment a plastic surgeon did the procedure. Which put me more at ease.
The lidocaine for numbing was very stingy. The procedure itself was very painless. It lasted an hour.
I have read that others have had 2 or 3 stitches on the surface to close the wound.
I had 3 dissolveable stitches in the under layer and 5 stitches on the outside. I can only guess that they cut out the mole pretty deeply and fairly wide.
I know this can be normal dependant on the mole.
The mole has been sent off to check for cancer or suspicious changes. My fingers are well and truly crossed that my results come back clear.
I've read others went back to work next day or after a few days.
I have a sick note for 3 weeks due to the placement of the excision and a chance of it coming open with excessive movement due to my job type.
Has anyone else had this experience?
Thanks for any comments in advance.

Hi, to anyone that's had results...
Did you get it by phone?
A letter in the post?
Or a call for face to face talk?

I had one taken off my back, OP - although it wasn't quite as big and they didn't go as deep as they went with yours. I had only external stitches. I got my results by letter, in about two weeks (it was benign). I was incapacitated for about three days, and could hardly use my arm, but it got slowly better after that, and it felt all right again in about a month. I was actually surprised at how painful it was in the days immediately afterwards.

Good luck, OP. I hope you get a clear result.

@Kins2 I am not sure where you are based as all areas will be slightly different. In our area you may not get pathology back for around 3 weeks but anything suspicious is highlighted sooner - usually around 2 weeks and you would be called sooner as the consultant reviewed the pathology. If you need seen sooner then you will get an appointment quickly eg if it needed a furtger excision. If not then you would normallly get an appointment around 6-8 weeks post surgery.

Hi IdrisElbow
Thank you for your words of encouragement.
I'm pleased for you that the melanoma hadn't gone too deep into the skin.
It's good they caught early.
I'm finding this forum helpful and encouraging.
It's totally different sharing with people that have experience of the procedures and exactly what it feels like. Mentally and physically.
Most people are unaware and see a mole as a small harmless blemish that once gone that's it!

Hi, to anyone still here on this post.
Happy christmas to all.
I'm still waiting for my results. I'm trying to make the most of today...I feel it for all of those still waiting for results over this festive season.
My husband was diagnosed and is still struggling with cancer.
I am praying that my results come back negative...as I need to be fit and well to take care of him.
This is the hardest wait.
It's not an easy thing, not to think about.

I know you said its a week since your mole was removed.
I hope you manage to have a very good holiday.
I phoned the secretary yesturday. I was hoping, no news is good news.
I was informed that regardless of the news at this particular hospital, the waiting time is still 5 weeks.

OP posts:
mincepiesrule · 25/12/2019 16:03

@Kins2 5 weeks seems a crazy amount of time to wait.
I have tried to push it to the back of my mind but it's difficult although the Build up to Xmas has helped.
Where my mole was removed has healed so well but I now have a dent in my arm where it used to be.
How is yours feeling now ?

Kins2 · 25/12/2019 16:35

Hi,
I am still a little sore. On the outside it's fine.
Almost healed. It's the internal stitches that are still causing a little soreness.
We have a quiet christmas and tend to get together for New years. So my mind hasn't had that much to distract it.

Christsmas day was amazing with our daughter and her family.
I've been checking the post in between holidays. No joy as yet.
Well I'm glad it Friday... my scar is healing nicely now and I can now get in the bath 😀
21 days since I've been able to have a bath. Had showers but I'm a bath girl.
This may go on till new years...
Now I can relax a bit more and just wait.
How was christmas for you mincepiesrule?

Can I ask those who went to the GP, was it an emergency appointment you got of a standard

mincepiesrule · 27/12/2019 19:12

@Kins2 it's been a lovely Xmas. We went to the pantomime today. The waiting for the results is hard. I'm not even at the 2 weeks yet Confused

@patchworkelephant123 I first went to my doctor who referred me to be seen on the 2 week referral
I saw a dermatologist who said I had to have it removed and needed to be done within the 31 days timeframe.

Kins2 · 27/12/2019 19:57

I had my apt 14days after my referral and had my mole removed 14 days after that.

Mincepiesrule,
I'm glad you had a good Christmas and went out to see s pantomime. Hopefully it was fun for you.
I enjoyed my bath but unfortunately after tending to it, my husband could see it wasn't quite healed and a bit angry looking.
He's applied a healing gel and redressed. A few more days should do the trick.

I was discharged from the nurse today

I had one removed that was in the middle of my back, over my spine between my shoulder blades. Because of the placement and e risk of popping my stitches bending twisting of lifting I had internal and external stitches and was signed off for 2 weeks.

Had another removed at the very top of my breast which was quite large. The excision was quite wide so had both internal and external stitches. Didn’t stay off work and the scar is a right mess.

Kins2 · 27/12/2019 20:14

I am sorry to hear your scar didn't heal well this time round.
I was also advised to stay off for two weeks, which I'm so glad I did.
My job is very physical so I needed to be careful.
My mole was removed just below my right shoulder blade about 3" away from my spine. I also had internal and outer stitches as it was excised deeply and cut quite wide. The scar is around one and a half inches long and looks fine.
The plastic surgeon made the cut on a slight diagonal as she said that's where I had the most movement in that area and it was less likely to come open.

Good morning all and a Happy new year!
I hope 2020 will be a good one...Smile
Just to give a quick update.
I am still checking the post daily for my results. I am now in my 4th week of waiting. Next week will be the 5th!
I hope those of you that were waiting have recieved your results and they were favourable Flowers

mincepiesrule · 04/01/2020 12:45

@Kins2 happy new year to you x

mincepiesrule · 07/01/2020 15:50

Any news yet @Kins2 ?. I will be 3 weeks waiting tomorrow. It's quite frustrating.

kshaw · 07/01/2020 16:04

i waited 10 weeks to get my results. had to have face to face talk to give me stage 1a melanoma. I had a further op 3 weeks later and then all clear through letter. I had to ring up to chase results within that 10 weeks so would advise to do so. Good luck!

Kins2 · 07/01/2020 16:33

Hi, mincepiesrule,
Thanks for checking in on me. I haven't heard anything yet.
I phoned the secretary to chase up my results this monday.
She is good though and encourages me to phone. I will try again next week. That will be week 6.
She said no results have come through yet and we are now looking at a 6 week wait.
It's so frustrating. Especially as no news, isn't nessarily good news in our case.
How are you?

OP posts:
Kins2 · 07/01/2020 16:38

Hi, kshaw,
Thank you for your post.
It must have been difficult waiting for so long and then receiving a positive result!
I can only imagine how worried you were when you were asked to go in for a face to face talk.
May I ask where you had your biopsy?
I'm pleased for you that you had your 2nd op and now have the all clear. That's the best news. Smile
