Anyone know anything about high blood sugar levels?

I've been crashing after lunch each day (literally can't keep my eyes open - luckily I work for myself from home) and so bought a blood glucose testing kit.

Just crashed again for an hour and took a reading when I woke up and it shows 8.3 which it describes on a little chart as "borderline" but gives no more information. Is this a high reading and something I should get checked out with the GP? Googling is giving me confusing information but it looks like its quite high?

Check with your GP re diabetes.

8.3 an hour or two after a meal doesn't sound too bad. You'd be better taking it a few hours later, i.e. just before your evening meal. I have T2 diabetes and have always been told to take readings before meals not after. A meal is always going to push up sugar levels.

It depends, how long after food was it - if only an hr its prob OK - can also depend what th food was.

You probably need longer lasting carbs to stop the crshing - so brown stuff (pasta bread etc) and make sure you have a balanced meal. Are you getting enough sleep at night as well?

It won't hurt to go and have an HBa1C test (measures whether sugars have been high over last three months) but it maybe you are pre diabetic as well ie not quite! and there ar things you can do to put things right short term

Anyone who isn't diabetic would not have a reading over 7.5 go see your go

Pipandmum · 05/12/2019 20:04

Your levels should be between 4-6. You should go get checked for diabetes if it's that high. I have type 1 and that would be on the high side of my after meal goal.

gp bloody autocorrect

Normal range is between 4 and 7, although depending what you had eaten and how long later you took the reading I wouldn't think 8.3 is something to panic about.

However you can see from the range of replies that you really need to speak to a professional.

Take a test before eating and again 2 hours after a meal.

Hmm so I took a reading this morning after waking up and it was 5.1 which I understand is completely normal. I don't want to bother the GP if its nothing so I think I'll just take a few readings over the next couple of days and track it first. It obviously fluctuates a lot!

The fluctuation is what it's all about.

Cheeseboardcriminal · 06/12/2019 20:39

It's supposed to fluctuate. Take one before an meal and one about 2 hours after. That will give you more of a clue.
