Acid reflux

I've suddenly (mid 40s) been hit by this, having never had it before and it's unnerving. Should I go and see the doctor or is it okay to just take OTC remedies? I've had heartburn before, but I hate the acid reflux - the horrible sour taste in my mouth, feeling sick all the time, not being able to sleep for the discomfort. I started taking Nexium today, but it hasn't had any effect yet (it does say on the leaflet to give it 2-3 days), so just popping antacids whenever the horrible feeling comes back. Should I be worried? Should I go and get it checked out? Or it is just one of those things that everyone gets?

You could try actimel drink yoghurts?

Or like me, visit the GP if it's going on. They may refer you for a scope test and offer stronger PPI's....I take ranatidine daily which helps!

Go to your GP acid reflux can be damaging, you need to find out what's causing it rather than just treating symptoms especially if it's a new thing for you. In the meantime don't eat anything a good 4 to 5 hours before bed, raise the head of your bed so you're sleeping on a slope, avoid acidic food and drink like caffeine, alcohol, spicy food, cooked tomatoes and garlic and most importantly don't smoke.

Agree that you should see your GP.

While waiting to go, try taking Gaviscon Advance after each meal and at bedtime. It will help to stop the acid reaching your throat and giving you nausea. For a cheaper alternative try Peptac. You can only get them both at a pharmacist but you don't need a prescription.

Get it checked out, but keep in mind that acid reflux is very common during peri-menopause. Are you having any other issues?

zafferana · 06/12/2019 19:57

I didn't realise that @Aquamarine1029. Yes, I have other peri-menopause symptoms and have done for a while now. I'll see if I can get an appointment with the doctor before the kids break up from school. The Nexium is working reasonably well, as long as I stick to very bland foods. I don't smoke, but a few sips of a fizzy alcoholic drink made me feel ill again and coffee and dark chocolate are bad too. I really hope this isn't permanent Sad
