Any dentists out there that can share some knowledge...?

Hi

Some background for context.

6 weeks ago I had a 'filling replaced' (speech marks relevant - bear with me 😊) it was an amalgam filling that was damaged and I asked for a white filling as a replacement.

After the dentist had replaced the filling he told me that when a tooth was drilled there was a risk that the nerve could be damaged and in those circs you would need root canal work. But he said he hadn't mentioned that risk before he replaced my filling because it was a shallow filling so the risk was negligible. The guy that replaced my filling isn't my regular dentist, they have someone who does all the fillings.

Since having the filling I have been in constant pain, the tooth is massively sensitive, I can't eat on it and drinking anything cold is painful. My face aches and I'm getting bad headaches - but the intensity of the pain ebbs and flows.

I went back to the dentist saw my regular dentist. He took an x ray and told me no sign of a problem with the tooth or the filling and he recommended;

Removing it and having a temp filling for a few weeks to see if the pain settled down before replacing it. but said that it could be a sign the nerve was dying as there was always a risk with drilling a tooth that the nerve could get damaged, and if that was the case I may need the nerve removing and root canal work and I would have been warned about that before the filling was done...

In addition the X-ray clearly showed that only half my filling was replaced so I know have a filling which is half amalgam and half resin.

my initial question - could the fact my filling was only half replaced be causing the problem as I imagine the join between the two different substances can't be entirely secure - ?

Any help from someone with knowledge really gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

The amalgam and half resin shouldn’t be a problem. Maybe digging the amalgam out may have compromised the tooth so that’s why they left some in. If the filling is too high in the bite that can cause pain and discomfort.
