Will Movocol unblock a toilet?

My son has huge issues with his bowels. He's been prescribed Movocol and picosulphate, he also has autism and huge issues with taste and won't take either of the medication.

As a result he only has a bowel movement every three or four days, they are massive and hard and normally block the toilet.

Not normally a problem my luigi plunger is fab but this time it's not moving the blockage, I'm sure it's pooh! I have a few months worth of movocol and I'm thinking if I shove a load down the toilet it should soften the pooh? And then make it possible to clear the blockage and flush it all away? Does this sound right?

Add washing up liquid and leave for an hour, then Cling film you loo, all the way around too create an air tight seal, then push on it, the vacuum forces the liquid blocked to move.

Did you sort it? Get a stick from outside, give a good prod and chuck it away. Then flush. Or let it drain then do the hot water trick with some fairy liquid

Movicol works by drawing water into the intestines from the surrounding tissues of the body to increase the water in the stools therefore making them wetter and softer. Rather than dissolving the stools.

The pico is a stimulant laxative so increases the spasms of the intestines to help move stools along.

I’d suggest trying a wire coat hanger to try to carve up the stool to help it disappear.

Could you try giving your DS his meds in a game? So in a a syringe he can squirt into his mouth, or a water pistol. Also whilst it’s preferable for him to take his entire dose at the same time, if you’re really struggling could you split it up into much smaller amounts, with perhaps a sweet at the end of each ml?

Did you ever read about the poo knife?

lazymum99 · 30/11/2019 19:07

Unravel a wire hanger. Poke it down and mush up the blockage. Absolutely disgusting but it works.

Thank everyone, I've tried the movocol in everything I can think of as it is better that he has some than none at all but he can taste it in everything, he has sensory processing difficulties. I would love to marry a plumber but sadly with four children with disabilities there aren't many takers :( I will buy some bio washing powder, I've tried bleach but it's made no difference. I don't have any wire coat hangers. I can't flush the toilet now as it'll overflow! I'm just going to have to start bailing and clear it by hand I think...

Movicol comes in different flavours. As well as plain, there is a lemon and lime flavour and chocolate flavour as well.

As well as the usual psyllium husk etc, have you tried letting have some small sugar free boiled sweets. They have artificial sweetener in them and there are warnings on the packet that consuming too much can cause a laxative effect! I can confirm this is the case 😮 I have a sluggish bowel and find a few (3 or 4) of these sweets does the trick. For me they work better than bisacodyl (and are a lot cheaper too).

I have an autistic son who uses way too much toilet paper. So I became used to unlocking toilets. Any coat hanger will do, it doesn't new to be the old fashioned wire one. As long as it isn't a trouser hanger. Just snap off the hook and use curved end to go around the bend. Have a carrier bag (one without holes) handy to put the hanger in afterwards.

Then to minimise future blockages, cheap toilet paper is your friend. Triple ply, quilted toilet paper and big poos do not flush easily!

This has made me laugh, sorry OP. For a laxative I would try lactulose, you can buy from the pharmacy it is a sweet taste without that saltiness of the movicol. Not quite as good as movicol but better than nothing if he won't take it.

A bucket of boiling water & a full bottle of washing up liquid last thing at night, the morning after cover the toilet with cling film, makesure it is all sealed, flush the toilet, the cling film will swell up, press it firmly but carefully down to force the water through.

ClownsandCowboys · 30/11/2019 22:56

@IAmUniquelyMe my autistic dd uses tonnes of loo paper too and frequently blocks the toilet. We get through loads of the stuff.

My daughter can taste anything you mix with anything. Movicol needs to be mixed with water first, and then added to something. If you mix it with juice/milk it won't work.

Dd once knew I'd dissolved 1 tiny travel sickness tablet in a massive strawberry milk.

I use bamboo sticks that you use for kebabs. Then dispose afterwards.

Just buy the deadly power loo unlocked liquid in the supermarket or DIY store eg homebase

MollyHuaCha · 01/12/2019 15:59

Do be careful what you put into this blocked up toilet.

If you follow pp advice and add the bleach and dishwasher tablets and washing up liquid etc. etc. you might make a chemical cocktail which gives off noxious fumes.

Harp1977 · 01/12/2019 16:16

Wrap the toilet seat area in clingfilm completley air tight around the bowl and flush it creates a vacuum and should clear it without causing the toilet to overflow

The most favourite of subjects, but over a week or so, i did scrap unfinished chips and friend egg, spaghetti down the toilet, simply as I have black fly at the hint of any food or especially fruit. Tried everything from to in liquid form and obviously going out for a toilet run! Now the new flange hasn't done anything. That could be as I am not inserting it correctly into the ubend. in a flat, and three days on, there is an odour, obviously dealt with, but the blockage isn't/ Yes I can call out someone, but not before my Mumsnet team has suggested something I can do please. My cat lost shedloads of weight because of you guys, please help with this. My son in law would, but I couldn't bear the embarrassment of asking, as much as I love him, actually because I do!!!! Thank you, exhausted from Berkshire. xx
