Excruciating pain, to the point of tears with infected tooth. Will the pain still be there after the first part of root canal?

I’ve been in agony for about two weeks now. At first we thought it was the pain from the jawbone reshaping after an extraction, possibly an infection so I was put on antibiotics. A few days later and the pain is worse and it’s felt near my ear and lower jawline to my chin. Looks like the tooth is infected and I had the first part of the root canal done today. Will hopefully get it finished Monday coming.

I’m really hoping that when the numbness wears off the same pain won’t come back because, and I’m actually being serious here, I’d rather die than try and cope with it again because I cannot sleep with it or rest at all.

Anyone have any reassuring stories that the pain shouldn’t come back now? I’ve been finally comfortable for the last so many hours and as it slowly wears off I’m scared I’m going to be rocking and crying again while trying not to envision the quickest way to end things.

Had a root canal after a tooth became painful. After that there was a very dull ache for a while but nothing like the pain before.

But your dentist should have prescribed antibiotics after a root canal. Especially if there was already fear of infection...

TwattingDog · 29/11/2019 15:29

Take pain relief now, and preempt it. In my experience (many root canals!) it shouldn't be as bad as they should have removed the infection and the pressure will have been released. You may be a bit sore though from the work they did today, hence taking pain relief now before the anaesthetic wears off.

Pinkbonbon Sorry, I forgot to say. I’m still on the antibiotics given a few days ago so will continue them and that should clear up any infection. A dull ache sounds like bliss right now lol. All I can take is paracetamol and I’ve taken two doses today already and can only have two more so I’ve been holding off on it but will take some soon.

As pp said, the damaged nerve bit should be all gone so you should be fine.

The worst part was the antibiotics leaving a rank taste in my mouth after a few days xD but stay the course, better safe than sorry.

Can you take brufen, works well alongside paracetamol.

Napqueen1234 · 29/11/2019 15:41

I had this just last week! When I had the first part of the root canal at the emergency dentist immediately after it was really painful I was beside myself. And this when still half numb! I was crying and terrified of waiting for the second part. Honestly the next day I woke up with very slight sensitivity but virtually no pain. I can only take paracetamol as pregnant (didn’t have an infection though just an exposed nerve so may be different- when they do the first part they insert antibiotics into the tooth then cover with a temp filling). Fingers crossed for you it settles- it’s a grim thing to have to do but once the whole root canal is done it should be pain free. Tooth pain is the WORST!

Krisskrosskiss · 29/11/2019 15:43

They get rid of the nerve in the first part so yes the pain should completely go! You may feel a bit sore on the gum because of the work having been done but all the nerve pain should have gone. The gum soreness was just taken away by paracetamol for me.
My root canal was great, the pain went straight away and I've had no problems at all with it since.

Asteriskthetired I can’t, well I shouldn’t but I had been for a long time before I knew I couldn’t. Don’t know how I missed it but I take sertraline and ibuprofen isn’t supposed to be taken alongside it. I had to cave last night and took it even knowing the risks, it was 4am and I was climbing the walls and about ready to top myself so I took it thinking the risk was worth it but I want to avoid it now.

I’m not sure how it works but I’ve only had a bit done today and I don’t know if the nerves will still be in there until Monday when I get the rest of it done and it gets filled with a long term filling.

Napqueen1234 I’ve had tooth pain before but this is by far the worst. Probably made worse by having to crack on and fly twice in a few days, do a full clinic with the younger one etc. I haven’t had any pain since having the work done but I’m still a bit numb and bricking it. It’s wearing off and the same pain hasn’t come back yet so I’m holding out hope it will be okay until Monday when the rest of the procedure is done.

Krisskrosskiss I feel silly for not asking this specifically after she was finished, I asked many questions but not that. I’m hoping the nerve has been taken but I was an emergency appointment and wasn’t in there for long at all, I know she put medicine inside and a temporary filling to cover it. It’s wearing off now and I’m feeling some aching but no sharp pain and hopefully it stays that way. Either way, I’m grateful for the few hours relief I’ve had from the numbing injection.

Oh I feel for you.

I had 2 root canals last year and after the first part of both of them I could've kissed my dentist.

My pain didn't come back after the first part.

I now live in total fear of toothache.

I hope it's the same for you and the pain is totally gone. For good. Evil bastard teeth!

Aaarrgghhh · 29/11/2019 16:27

AloneLonelyLoner Thank you. I’m getting feeing back and some pain but it’s not like what I had before. I managed an entire plate of food relatively easy which was nice. I’ve everything crossed hoping the pain I was having doesn’t come back.

I've never been told about ibuprofen and sertraline :-/

What about codeine? You can buy co-codamol at a chemist. I usually use Paramol (dihydracodeine) for dental pain.

Has it not worn off yet?

Aaarrgghhh · 29/11/2019 17:34

TwattingDog I didn’t know either until I’d been taking it for a week and many other times before that. Already had co codamol for three days so can’t take it anymore. I think it’s nearly all worn off now. I’ve got the ache of where needle went in an pressure around the tooth but no pain like what I had earlier. If I can feel the needle pain then surely I’d be feeling the other pain if it was going to to still be there.

I had a good tumble about with the younger one which I couldn’t do for the last two weeks and have been speaking without wanting to cry so I’m taking all of this as a positive. Just going to take it easy and let things heal, can’t wait for Monday and then that should be it for a while.

In fact, it was a doctor that prescribed be the ibuprofen one day for something else and she knows I’m on sertraline. Maybe it’s okay to mix but not for everyone?
