It's gonna be another long long night (toothache)

Had niggling toothache over the weekend which became agony last night when lying down. Didn't sleep at all last night. Got an appointment at dentists today and they xrayed/removed/replaced a filling which had decay behind it. The numbness has now worn off and it is just as sore as before so need to wait until morning and call for another appointment.

Only relief is if I am upright and I can't sleep like that. I have tried :

  • propped up on 3 pillows - unbearable pain starts within 15 mins and take ages to go again
  • paracetamol - does nothing
  • Ibruprofen - at same time as paracetamol still does nothing
  • tramadol (prescribed by vet for dog, but Dr said it's a human version so ok to try 🤣) - hate taking this one, but it did nothing
  • co-codamol (gives me an itchy face, but that would be better than stabbing tooth pain) - saved doseage for tonight and took 30 mins ago,and no relief yet
  • anbesol liquid - works for 15 mins then wears off, must have put on 15-20 times last night!!!
  • anbesol gel - useless
  • Clove oil - did nothing which was a surprise,as worked wonders in the past
  • oragel - numbs well but again wears off in 20 mins
  • warm water bottle - gave me a warm cheek, nothing else
  • rinsing with salt water - didn't help and tasted 🤮

Am I missing any magic tricks that are going to let me sleep?

I have no idea how to help but bucketloads of sympathy- I had similar and it's easily the worst pain I've ever had.

Co-codamol was the only thing that touched it for me but it didn't get rid of the pain.

Good luck for tonight, I really feel for you.

Oh you poor thing, that sounds exactly like the toothache I had a couple of years ago that resulted in going to the walk in dentist who took pity on me bawling my eyes out and gave me two cartridges of painkiller in the gums to help me get through to the next day and a trip back to my dentist. It's such an awful pain and I think I tried everything on your list. Big, big unmumsnetty hugs to you.

Oh op sounds aweful Flowers

The best pain killer advise I can give is co-cocodamol alternated with ibuprofen every 2/3 hrs. But if that's not helping you've tried everything else I can think of

Keep applying anbesol and orajel if they help of course

Can't advise on painkillers as it sounds like you've had enough.

You need cold though, not heat. Heat doesn't help. Go and raid your freezer for something.

Attempted to lie down, lasted less then 15 mins and throbbing sore again, 10 mins of orajel to calm down. Leaflet says to use 4 times a day max - have already used 5 times.

Dh has been sent to spare room so I can feel sorry for myself and move about, without worrying about waking him. Bedside table looks like a pharmacy 🤣

I'm 50, too old for all nighters!! Nearly fell asleep during my filling at dentist today when all numbed up!!

I’ve had this pain and I hate to say that nothing worked except a prescription strength anti inflammatory- naproxen might do it. But long term it’s just treatment. I really feel for you there is nothing like this pain x
