Worried about Step Dad's health and prognosis

Have posted about step dad before. He has always suffered with very bad chest problems - had them since a child but they have got worse over the years. He has oxygen at home now and gets about in a mobility scooter. Over the past years he has been going into hospital for iv antibiotics to treat his chest infections so being in hospital has become a routine thing. About four years ago he was admitted again but this time he really went downhill and ended up in the high dependancy unit for a few nights and the doctor told us the next 24/48 hours would tell how things would pan out.
Amazingly he pulled through this, even taking the doctors by surprise, although he was still not a well man and still requiring his oxygen pretty much most of the time.
Three weeks ago he went back into hospital again with another chest infection. He has had two courses of antibiotics, neither of which have made any difference.
This morning the doctor saw him and told him that he would have to stay in for another ten days and have a third course of antibiotics. If this one doesn't work then they will be sending him home anyway.
Have had mum on the phone in tears this morning as this sounds to us like there is nothing more they can do for him. We do know that he is going to be on his oxygen all the time now.
Mum is waiting for the consultant to phone her today to explain what this means for the future.
Why is life so hard?

Thanks loopylou6. I'm just so worried about mum and what she's going to do if he really goes downhill. She isn't in the best of health herself and is going to need a lot of support from my sister and I.
It's going to be a long day.

Been to see SD in hospital this afternoon and although he hasn't said anything he looks very down in the dumps.
Mum hasn't spoken to doctor as yet but did catch one of the team when we went to hospital who said that they won't let SD home until they have him sorted out.
So who knows now?

Sparkler - sorry to hear this. At least they are going to keep in until they can do something more for him - that's got to be a good thing hasn't it?

PS - Hopefully Wed night will cheer you up!

Think DG is doing meatballs - I'm bringing some highly fattening (sorry!) mini pastry parcels filled with sundried toms, couscous, olives, that sort of thing.
