Waiting for ct scan results is agonising

Three weeks ago, I had an ultrasound scan on my upper abdomen. I suffer from IBS and had asked for this scan myself just to rule out gallstone etc (even though I have no pain just wanted to rule it out).

The sonographer said all was ok but she noted there was a cyst on my left kidney. I asked if I would need that looked at and she said no, they were quite common.

Anyhow, the scan results went to my gp she noted that the cyst was large (6x4 cm) and unbeknownst to me she contacted the Urology department at my local hospital asking for advice. They never got back to her but instead I got an unexpected call from the ct scan department last week to have an urgent ct scan ASAP. I had it done (in a state of shock), I then went to see gp the next day. She was quite shocked as she said she had only asked for advice and wasn't particularly concerned as the ultrasound scan report didn't come to her as urgent and it was described as a cyst with no obvious blood supply on the Doppler test. She had asked for advice purely due to the size of the cyst.
So I tried not to worry but this morning I rang the gp surgery and the secretary says that my results haven’t come back but are going to be discussed in a meeting tomorrow!
I’m shitting it now 🙁

Hi OP

Hopefully they are just being thorough. Generally, they will get straight back to you if there's anything very worrying going on.

I was found to have multiple 'smallish' cysts on my kidneys during a scan for gallstones and was told that they are normal and lots of people have them. Hope it's something similar for you x

Thanks blackink

Are they going to be discussed as in for their learning on joint working between departments though? Sounds like someone's made a bit of an error along the line.

Afternooninthepark · 25/11/2019 15:07

I’m not sure hettysdrawers just banging my head against the wall by not getting any answers from anyone. Tried speaking to the consultants secretary but she just says she knows nothing!

Might be a bit late now but maybe ring the doctors back and explain you're worried and can they clarify what is meant by your results being discussed. If your results aren't back then I don't see how anyone can be discussing them! Hope you get it sorted for your peace of mind.

My DH had similar last year. They weren't sure it was a cyst or a stone so he went on to have X-rays and then an ultrasound. They need to do this to clarify. In his case it was a largish stone which they blasted with lithotripsy.

The meeting is almost certainly a multidisciplinary meeting and is completely normal. The urologists/radiologists (along with pathologists/renal physicians, etc) will go through all the scans & results for all the new customers for the week, discuss them and plan what (if anything) needs doing next. This is all so that when you do get the results it’s not just literally the result, but I will include an action plan if anything else is needed. This happens for benign findings as well as more sinister things so you can’t read anything much into the fact the scan’s being discussed at MDT. Hope all turns out well.

Thank you everyone.

Hope everything works out ok for you.

Miljea · 25/11/2019 23:03

The size of the cyst may have automatically generated a show at an MDT.

You would be amazed at how many 'incidental findings' are turned up by US and CT scans. Things that you could live your whole life being blissfully unaware of.

I'd put money on the fact it's a 'simple cyst' of no consequence.

But once detected, it has to be investigated in some way. They're proving they're doing their job.

Afternooninthepark · 26/11/2019 07:43

Thank you Miljea and Poppy

True Miljea I had one of those incidental findings which had to be investigated by CT and MRI. Agree it's worrying at the time but good that they are being thorough.

My ovarian cancer was only picked up because I had a MRI scan for something u related.
5 weeks after the scan results I had surgery, a complete hysterectomy, my appendix out and 3 ovarian cysts, the biggest of which weighed 50lb
