Surgery nerves

I am having surgery under general anaesthetic this week on my neck. I am totally scared.
Never had surgery, or any health issues. I am scared of not waking up, very dramatic I know, which is unlike me..

Looking for people's experiences to help me ease the nerves... Hopefully!

This was me a few years ago.
I explained to the staff admitting me how scared I was.
For me I have a vomiting phobia but i also had a terror of waking up.
it was fine.

Freem thank you. I think it's the gear of not being in control, I'm not good at that

I had 8 surgeries in 8 years and am still here to tell the tale! Six general anaesthetics and 2 with spinal and sedation. I found I was most nervous in the days before, once I got to the day of surgery I was calmer. Well, all apart from one where I was was totally cool all morning waiting, filling in forms, having my obs done... then cried all the way down to theatre and in the anaesthetic room Grin

I hope it goes well for you ThanksCake

Forgot to add, tell them you are nervous and they'll give you a pre med to help you relax. I have a fear of vomiting like the PP, I also asked the anaesthetist to make sure he gave me lots of anti sickness drugs in my drip.

Mountain thank you that really has helped. 8 surgeries! I hope no more any time soon for you.

I'm worried about just before They put you asleep, but I'm sure my mental image is a lot worse then reality. But I will tell them I am nervous and hopefully they will give me something to help, really good to know!

I’ve had several surgeries, the last one 4 weeks ago. I suffer terribly with anxiety generally but strangely enough I am quite calm before having a general anaesthetic.
I tell myself that it’s the anaesthetists sole job to keep me breathing and alive during the operation. He/she does it several times a day and knows what signs to look out for.
I actually rather like the feeling of being put to sleep, but I have chronic long term insomnia and spend hours every night trying to drop off to sleep 😂
