Scared Tinnitus MRI

Hoping for some reassurance, my other half seems to be unlucky with health scares lately and the stress of it all is really getting me down. Last Xmas we had investigations for cancer hanging over us and now after visiting the doctor with a tinnitus problem he’s being referred for an MRI scan. I can’t help imagining the worst even though he seems quite calm about it. Hiding the worries from the children is very difficult.

My husband has been on google and now convinced himself he’s got acoustic neuroma. Going to ring the docs in the morning to find out how long until the scan.

Please reassure him. It’s very unlikely. My husband had numerous other symptoms like the fullness in the ear and stroke like symptoms and even then it turned out negative.

He had a benign tumour removed from his leg a long time ago, so I think that’s on his mind. Thank you for your reassurances, it can’t be easy thinking back to such upsetting times. I’m keeping everything crossed and trying to carry on as normal. I’ve told him what ever the outcome we’ll face it and deal with it.

I've had tinnitus for nearly 10 years and also had an MRI couldn't find a cause. It's in my right ear doesn't bother me as much as it used to. I was worried before the MRI but I think it's common to not fond a cause and an mri I just give as precaution.

I’ve had an MRI for tinnitus 10 years ago. I developed it at age 20, never known what the cause is! I think this is the case most of the time for tinnitus

How is it possible to cope with the anxiety of waiting and conjuring up the worst outcomes in your head. Having trouble eating and have a constant knot in my stomach.

I was referred for an MRI for unilateral tinnitus in July. Not heard a sausage from the hospital yet, so I am not sure it'll be quick.

The highly unlikely tumour is benign anyway if I googled properly.

I know of a few people with an acoustic neuroma - both benign.

lilgreen · 20/11/2019 22:50

My friend had this and the MRI showed an acoustic neuroma. It’s benign and it’s being monitored by 6 monthly scans. If it grows quickly they’ll remove it, if not then they carry on monitoring. So if it is that, it’s a treatable thing. Good luck.

I had a brain MRI in June, took about 4 weeks from date ordered as non-urgent. Wasn't all clear so hospital phoned with results within first two weeks, I think for the most serious issues they are intouch very fast, within a week if not sooner. Generally the longer you wait for news the more likely it is good news.

I'm now awaiting a spine MRI - implied it would be pretty soon but said wait for results was 4 months but can phone to get earlier. I'm sure if it shows anything serious they will phone me. Most of the time results are all clear and even when they are not at least you know what the issue is and can get treatment. I find it best to think about other things as much as possible.

Hope he gets the all clear but some treatment.

Just to add some reassurance - even if it is an acoustic neuroma, which it most likely isn't!! (my DM had one) they are almost always benign! She was 69 when hers was found and she had it operated on - hers was large 3cm. There is also gamma knife treatment. Anyhow, she's all good now. Honestly - when it came to it her surgeon said that if you're going to get a tumour in the brain this is the one to get! Almost always benign, very slow growing and always treatable.

@pandasandrabbit @lumpy76 thank you both, what you’ve said has helped a bit with the anxiety of waiting. Good luck with the spine mri.

Thank you. I expect it will be all clear. Hope the MRI appointment comes through soon and your DH gets the all clear.
