Anyone taken betahistine for vertigo/tinnitus and it’s helped?

I’ve been taking it for a while and it doesn’t seem to be working. They did say it doesn’t always have an affect - no shit Sherlock!
Can anyone share their experiences and if it didn’t help, what did you do? I’m under ENT and been referred to the balance clinic but haven’t heard anything yet. It’s really affecting my life atm.

Dh takes it for Menieres Disease. He said it took about a month to properly kick in.

Have you tried following a very low salt diet?

JustDanceAddict · 16/11/2019 15:03

I don’t eat much salt but will try to cut down further. It’s really getting me down atm as recently I’ve missed work, social events etc because of the vertigo. It does tend to go away for months at a time but when it’s around, it’s horrid and anxiety inducing.,
I’m glad it helped your dh, they did say try it for six months.

Dh defiantly gets vertigo episodes after too much salt. Eating out is difficult.

He’s lost his driving licence. I guess that’s the hardest.

There are some exercises you can do which might help. They are linked on the Menieres website. I know you haven’t been diagnosed with that but I’m told they help vertigo in general.

You may have already tried this but have you tried epley manoeuvre? Made a big difference to me.

JustDanceAddict · 16/11/2019 15:55

I’m really worried about losing my licence although Ménière’s hasn’t been officially diagnosed yet I think it’s inevitable.
I’m not a big driver but my work is hard to get to on public transport, I’d probably have to change my hours.
The Epley is more for BPPPV which I have also had. It was done by a GP and worked well.

I just looked at the exercise link. Unfortunately they don’t help with the vertigo, but with the general imbalance which I don’t have. Once my attack is over, after a few hours I’m fine til the next one.

Dh did have to adjust his hours which as a teacher has been challenging.

Comefromaway · 16/11/2019 16:00

Dh has been told they can help reduce the frequency and intensity of the vertigo attacks if done 2-3 times a day (except he’s a bit lazy about them).

As well as a low salt, low caffeine, low alcohol diet I take betahistine. I continued to have vertigo attacks until I was put on a diuretic and the combination of all three seems to have got the menieres under control.

JustDanceAddict · 16/11/2019 16:27

I don’t drink much alcohol, I can swap to decaff if necessary and not a big salt person - - I can watch it more too - so will try these things. Maybe I should ask gp re the diuretic too.

I also work in a school but not teaching staff. I could start a bit later if necessary. I can get one bus but it’s a walk both ends so takes about an hour.
