Angular chelitis?

In July I had angular chelitis (I’m not deficient in anything, my Gp said it was just a one-off occurrence). They prescribed antibiotics which made it worse and also made my tongue white/grey (looked like very mild oral thrush but wasn’t)

I bought daktarin oral gel which cleared it. However my tongue still had this translucent white layer which wasn’t present before I took the antibiotics, even after using daktarin. My dentist said my tongue is fine and although it has the white film it is still within the range of a normal, healthy tongue so didn’t prescribe anything, and told me to stop using daktarin.

Here’s my problem, ever since July if I stop using daktarin, the angular chelitis keeps coming back? The corner of my mouth starts to feel sore but early use of daktarin stops it from fully splitting.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to use daktarin in time so have fully fledged angular cheilitis right now and am sick of it. Why do I have recurrent problems? Could it be related to my tongue being white?

I had this and it turns out I had become allergic to sodium laureth sulphate in toothpaste. I changed to sensodyne (the one either the green top only) and it went away!

Thank you! Might be a silly question but how did you manage to confirm that you were allergic?

I've used clotrimazole (thrush) cream v successfully to get rid of it.

Could you be anaemic? I believe there's a link with anaemia and AC.

NurseySA · 16/11/2019 19:27

I used Clotrimazole very thinly, then applied Sudocream to protect the area. It cleared quickly.

I’m not anaemic, no. No issues with recent full blood count or ferritin tests. When I did have low ferritin last year, I never had angular chelitis. It’s odd.

Will try clotrimazole, thank you. I’m able to clear it within a week with daktarin - it fully heals but within a few weeks my corners feel tender again and the cycle restarts. Might just visit my Gp again actually.

Once you have got it cleared up, I find that tying to prevent it recurring is a good move - I use Lanolips 101 - which is basically lanolin. It helps to stop the corners of your mouth being wet all the time and creating a fertile breeding ground for bugs and yeasts. Lanolips is not cheap but a tiny tube lasts forever.
