Piles or likely to be something more serious?

I know nobody can diagnose these things over the internet, but I’m quite worried and would appreciate hearing other peoples experiences.

For the past three days, my DP has had a fair bit of bright red blood (I’d guess about two table spoons each time) in his stool or rather on top of it / in the toilet water (yes, I insisted on having a look

Has he had any change in his bowel habits - diarrhoea, constipation etc?
There are many conditions that can cause bleeding like this, colitis, crohns etc.

Please stay off Dr Google - no matter what symptoms you search for, it's a guarantee that the big C will show in the results.

I heard that bright red blood is good (well not sinister) and most likely piles. It's darker, brown blood that's more concerning. By all means go to the doctor anyway.

Not really a change in bowel movements, although he did have diarrhoea (plus a bit of wind and stomach rumbling) on the first day of bleeding, normal stool the second day, fairly soft again the third day. He didn't notice anything unusual before. No pain like passing glass or anything like that.

Flu and sinusitis are pretty much gone now and he's feeling fine in himself (actually planning to go cycling later on). No tiredness or loss of appetite. He had a blood test (due to the influenza and sinusitis) a few days ago where inflammation levels were only very slightly raised (almost normal levels) so all of that doesn't really seem to fit with Crohn's or colitis, I think?

I know I'm silly to even ask on here or google too much. I just would have expected the bleeding to stop after a day or two with piles and am also a professional worrier.

I thought that too, but with things like rectal cancer (rather than higher up bowel cancer) it would be bright red blood, I think.

I don't think it would necessarily stop after a day or two, depends how bad they are - def worth asking the doc - they will do a quick examination and ask some questions and refer to have a colonoscopy if they want to explore further but I do think it would be something benign - always best to check tho - it at least stops the worry!

Thanks for the reassurance! As mentioned above, GP didn't examine him at all but referred him to a proctologist straight away, so we'll definitely know more in a week. Just hate waiting.

Ah sorry - I didn't think I knew what a proctologist was lol I just googled - sounds like the answer isn't far away - waiting is always rubbish, I think though if it were something terrible he would have other symptoms tho like weight loss, night sweats and stuff - try to relax until you know more - isn't it ridiculous I have health anxiety and am ok at giving rational advice but shit at taking it! Lol

Haha, I know exactly what you mean re dishing out rational advice to others but being hopeless at taking it myself, it's maddening!

I recently went as I was passing mucus streaked with red blood. Was examined straight away and diagnosed with internal piles. I also don’t have a long of pain, just a slight twinge a small way ‘in’. I have had diarrhoea caused by antibiotics at the same time which made them worse

My specialist subject lol. I always though fresh blood was less scary than black. Probably piles or a fissure - both of which are pretty painful - did I miss a mention of pain? Best to get checked out. Most of my bleeds are only a day or two but the actual fissure takes days to heal and piles come and go. Am quite shocked the GP didn't take a look though in my experience they are not always correct but its not like you can look at your own ass eh?

Shitty (what an apt username for this thread!), thanks for sharing your experience! My DP says the same pain wise, just a slight twinge, really. I'm hoping it's just piles that have maybe been made worse by the antibiotics.

Ally, no, you didn't miss any mention of pain, apparently no more than slight twinge / minor discomfort. Re the GP not examining him, as mentioned we're not in the UK and it's pretty common to just go or be referred straight to a specialist with a lot of things. For example my GP wouldn't even look at anything gynae related and tell me to just see my gynaecologist.

Yes I have piles and frequent fissures ... plus I had polyps for a few years which had to be removed surgically - like I said, my specialist subject lucky me. Our GPs try and cover everything and fail badly so your system is probably pretty smart
