Got blood taken at GP, now look...

Went to the GP this morning to get routine bloods done, turned up and it was a young lad who I was a little nervous had no experience but he seemed fairly confident so I sat down and he carried on, I didn't feel much, off I went a few minutes later

Just gone to take the plaster off and I'm horrified to see the area is very swollen and has lots of blood filled pockets/clots (not sure what you would call them). I've never had this with getting blood taken but the more I think about it, at the time when he was taking it I hardly felt a thing which was unusual which is leading me to think he hadn't put the needle in far enough and was maybe just drawing blood from surrounding area....
Anyway, should I go back to the GP to get them to look at it? Is it dangerous!?

I've had this before usually the damage is done by the plaster not the needle

So, can you bend it without discomfort has the bleeding stopped and do you still have sensation in the area any no's get thee to a hcp if its feeling ok and behaving fine your good to go

It's a bruise. Nothing to worry about, It will go in a few days.

It's just a bruise. Do you visit the doctor for those done in the usual way?

This is usually caused by the needle puncturing both sides of the vein so blood leaks from the hole on the other side and causes the bruises. Looks nasty but nothing to worry about. Will disappear just like any other bruise.

Sorry to be so dramatic it's just I've never had it like that before, I've been quite lucky when getting blood taken in the past...I think I've had a bruise once but it wasn't like this as these are more like blood filled pockets.

There's no way he got blood from the surrounding area, that's not how it works. If he got blood, he was inside the vein.

I had blood taken a lot during my first pregnancy as it turned out I'd not been vaccinated. I had one lot that really hurt and came up in a whopper of a bruise. Started Ike yours.

Happened to DH but his was at least 10 times bigger than yours OP! It was done at the hospital in the Blood Tests department too.

It went after about 3 days, no treatment necessary. Just ached a bit I think.

I recommend medicinal chocolate though.

I've also had bruises from time to time, they know when they've caught something and usually apologise "sorry, you're going to have a bruise there" it clears up quickly in my experience.

It's a small hematoma which is a bruise under the skin. It's quite normal for some people to get them especially if the person taking your blood was a bit nervous. It will go in a few days. If it gets bigger or you start to feel unwell go back to your gp

He’s transfixed the vein, it happens. The needle has gone through the bottom of vein causing bleeding into the tissue. Looks like when the plaster has been put on you’ve bent the elbow. Some doctors tell you to do that and it tends to cause this pattern of bruise. Better to keep arm straight and apply direct pressure with your fingers for a few minutes. Then try to avoid bending arm for further 15-30 mins. BTW it will look worse before it gets better I can see a lot of blood in the deeper tissues around the red bruising.

Looks like he's had to wiggle the needle about a bit to get it into the right place.

I'm one of those lucky people with hard to find veins

This is what I had when I needed an IV and 11 tries to get a vein. They finally went in on the top of my foot.
