Iron level?

Hi. Had lots of blood tests done earlier this year - ferritin level came back at 16 ug/L so they put me on 3 months of iron tablets. I'm still feeling crap, so asked for them to be redone (plus thyroid, vitb12 folate, and blood sugar). GP told me when prescribing iron that my level should be 61.

Results back today & it's up to 31, but clearly still not 61.

B12 folate is up a little bit & now bottom of normal range. Thyroid - FSH & T4 both low (subclinical, but both been low for years - I know with low T4, TSH is usually high for hypothyroidism).

Anyone got any ideas? Had similar? I'm feeling utterly shit. My blood sugar isn't back yet, but was pre-diabetic last test.

Hi OP,
whilst not a direct answer to your question - it is often found that low folate B12 thyroid , iron seems to occur with Low Vitamin D as well . I wonder if you had your vitamin D level checked. It can cause similar symptoms.
The range often described as "normal" for VitD , is 50 -200 . You probably want your level to be over 100 , ( in UK units of nmol/L ). There is very good reason for that level. By supplementing usually between 3000 IU and 5000 IU per day you should easily reach that figure.

IF you are interested , have a look here , with lots of information , I posted quite a bit there. <a class="break-all" href="https://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/general_health/2841497-If-you-are-vitamin-D-deficient-what-have-you-been-prescribed" target="_blank">www.mumsnet.com/Talk/general_health/2841497-If-you-are-vitamin-D-deficient-what-have-you-been-prescribed</a>

If you want any more information , just get back to me OR I have posted quite a bit about Vitamin D , here on Mumsnet. Just search my nickname.

Best of Luck,

Low TSH and low FT4 suggest secondary hypothyroidism of some sort. The guidelines say that if this is suspected you should be referred to an endocrinologist. May I suggest that you read up around that and then go b ack to your GP.

Ferritin is still not high enough either.

@Bettertobehealthy hi. Thank you for all that info - yes my D3 was low too. They supplemented it then said "just buy OTC for winter". Ughhhh.

I'll check all your info. Thank you so much!!

@NaToth I read that online, and one GP tried to refer me but was then told they wouldn't refer at those levels! I'm so fed up! I think I need to see an endocrinologist- why is it so hard???? My GPs are usually really supportive. Fed up!!!
