22 month old- ulcer agony

My son is in agony - he has over 10 mouth ulcers against his bottom lip and I when I looked yesterday he has white spots under his tongue and down the back of his throat. He is in so much pain. The doctor said there is nothing she can do to help him, just apply bonjela (which is okay for those on his lips and inside his cheeks) and use Calpol. It would be impossible to reach most of them on his palette and in his throat with Bonjela. He isnt eating, isnt drinking a lot (Ive tried, beakers, straws, spooning it in) he is taking a little ice cream, yoghurt etc as its cold. I gave him finely cut chicken in gravy for dinner last night and he wouldnt eat anything, not even mashed up banana. He is not sleeping and is, as you can well imagine, very irritable and upset. I know how painful it is to have one. Has anyone got any advice??? or will he have to bear it until they go???

Alley22, does your ds have any chickenpox like blisters on his hands or feet or has he had any recently. It sounds to me like what he has is hand foot and mouth disease. If it's that it's not as bad as it sounds. There isn't any cure, it just goes away. However, as everyone has said relieving the mouth ulcer pain is all you can do. Ice cream and cold drinks help. Also, i've found that calpol is useless on my son and nurofen works much better. If your gp won't come out, call nhs direct and they should be able to get someone out to you. Make sure you tell them that your baby is in a lot of pain, and you are concerned for his health as he is not eating or drinking (exagerate a bit if you have to... it's your baby!). Good luck. When my friend's son got hand, foot and mouth, it was misdiagnosed as thrush by his gp, but the mouth ulcers did calm down on their own within a few days.

Howz it going alley22 ?
Thinking of you and your DS.
You describe the ulcers / coldsores perfectly. Hope it sorts itself out soon.

Leese - I also suffered from mouth ulcers and eventually went to an ulcer clinic. ( I was getting about 5-6 a week )
Chatted to the guy who suggested I stop drinking huge quantities of Diet Coke as there was something in it that caused my ulcers to errupt.
Now I only suffer occaisionally - oh yes and the day after I have a can of fizzy drinks I can guarrantee an outburst
Maybe this could be you?

leese · 31/08/2002 19:28

crystaltips - thats really interesting - hadn't really considered that before, just the usual tomatoes etc. Don't drink masses of fizzy drinks, but am wandering now if my outbreaks could be linked. Thankyou - it's good to know things like that

Alley22,

I agree with Jasper that this sounds like Herpes simplex, it will improve within a couple of weeks, plenty of fluids, no sharp or spicy foods.

Sometimes it has to be treated with tetracylcine to prevent/treat secondary (bacterial) infection of the ulcers.

I would recommend taking him to the dentist as they see a lot more mouths than the GP.

Also blotting his ulcers with gauze dipped in a 2% solution of hydrogen peroxide (from the pharmacy or dentist) may help as I'm assuming he can't rinse and spit out yet.

how are you getting on - ? I was thinking of you today. I've just got a crop of ulcers today - due to a can of fanta yesterday ....

Note to self : Stick to the G&T's

Hope Ds is on the mend

I was very interested to read this thread as ds aged 5 has just had a large crop of ulcers, from reading the contributions it definately sounds like the HS virus. My question if anyone can help is that now that the mouth ulcers have cleared he has developed small pustules on the base of his thumbs (he is a thumb sucker)I cannot believe taht this is unrelated, are they cold sores or a bacterial infection?also will sucking his thumb whilst they are there reinfect his mouth?Any advice welcome

clucks · 08/09/2002 17:26

Philly

Do the thumb lesions seem painful? If so, you can sometimes get a nail infection from HS that is very difficult to shake off. and quite sore, If it isn't sore, I wouldn't worry if they disappear.

aloha · 08/09/2002 20:13

I don't have any solutions but wondered if you should give some painkillers such as baby paracetemol (more effective than Calpol according to my GP) and if you think he should see the doctor, just turn up near the end of morning surgery and insist that it is an emergency involving a baby in pain. They will see you, I'm sure. I hope things get better soon. Your ds sounds very poorly.

Alley22,

How is DS - I have been thinking of you - I hope things are a lot better by now ?

Alley22 · 18/09/2002 12:02

hi crystaltips, things are better now, but it lasted for a week and he didnt drink/eat or sleep properly so it was worrying, Im not sure what caused it.

Since then we have had a stomach infection and a cold too - it doesnt stop with children does it!

Hope you are better, its nice to hear from you.
