Can anyone recommend a dermatologist in central London? I’ve had acne since I was a teenager and I’m approaching 40 and still have it. I also think I have rosacea.

What would a dermatologist actually be able to do and would it come straight back as soon as the treatment stopped? I really don’t want to take antibiotics so don’t want to it to see a dermatologist if that’s all they’re going to offer me.

I can't recommend a Dermatologist in your area, but I did see a consultant dermatologist privately for Rosacea recently. My Rosacea had become very unmanageable, skin was covered in sores and scales and was really affecting my confidence. I have a 6 week prescription of antibiotics, please don't rule it out, it has made a huge difference to my skin, and also Soolantra, which I was advised not to start until I had been on the antibiotics for 4 weeks, reason being is I think the Soolantra can be quite inflammatory in the first weeks so my skin needed to settle down with the antibiotics first. Soolantra gets mixed reviews on line, but I am feeling hopeful and wish I had seen a dermatologist sooner!

Are you planning on going private or through the nhs? You can look for a dermatologist via the British Association of Dermatologists website (under quicklinks): www.bad.org.uk/

If you go private make sure to check on there or with the GMC (easily accessible with a quick search) that they are properly qualified and on the specialty register, because a lot of people with private practices in central London who claim to be dermatologists are not actually consultant level dermatologists.

In answer to your other question, there are lots of things that can be done for acne, from topical treatments (ie creams) to oral medication, so it’s definitely worth pursuing!

Are you looking privately or on the NHS?

I’m prepared to pay to go privately. I can’t see my GP giving me a referral very readily.
