mine....

Hi Harman,

Remeber me from one of the other Mirena threads you're on? I'm still watching with interest as I have exactly the same questions as you. My AF doesn't sound nearly as bad as yours, but it's still enough to make me think about my GP's suggestion of trying Mirena.

Like you, I'm trying to balance out the positive and negative experiences. The 'official' Mirena website quotes about 88% success rate, with the rest of women having differing degrees of side effects.

I was on the mini pill for several years with no problems so hoping I wouldn't be sensitive to the hormone.

My main problem is that I'm such a wuss and am really squeamish about having one fitted. My GP showed me a real one, and thought it was quite funny that I wanted to leave there and then, but I really didn't want to see what might be going up there! What a baby (and, yes, I've given birth naturally twice!)!!

How are you getting on?

BL

I love mine. I HAVE put on weight but that could just be age and wine. I get really pumped up norks around when my period would have been. They hurt, but are unfeasibly fantastic, so it's worth it. And no periods for 5 years. It's such a personal thing. That thread that expat mentioned contained horrors. It's a try it and see thing I think.

Have just been researching other threads and am now even more scared of fitting as I have a retroverted uterus and a tight cervix (a previous GP didn't believe I'd given birth...)

milkymill · 25/09/2007 10:58

Bellalasagne, I also apparently have a 'tight cervix', and tbh fitting was v.painful for me. I don't want to scare you, but mine actually perforated my uterus and I had to have it surgically removed. I suspect this was down to the gp having to 'push' too much in an attempt to get it in. The chances of this happening are around 1 in 1000 though! Also you have a slightly increased risk if you are a) breastfeeding, and b)previous c-section. I was both of these.
Do you mind me asking, what symptoms you experience with a tilted womb?

yemma · 02/10/2007 13:32

I had the Mirena fitted just over 3 months ago, it was sheer hell having it put in.. I have never felt so much pain in my life (I dont have kids)... For the next few weeks I had cramping most days.. I now have no sex drive what so ever and my boyfriend thinks im not attracted to him anymore.. I dont have periods anymore, that is the only good thing about it.. It feels slightly uncomfortable when having intercourse and sometimes have a sharp pain if hit in the wrong position.. This mirena was my last resort, i've tried all contraception, im very sensitive to hormones in the pill.. Since Mirena Im not depressed but not overlly happy either, my stomach is quite bloated and my skin is starting to get bad..Im a bit agitaed and I still get cramps some days.. Hard to explain but I can kind of feel the Mirena in my uterus.. I find I need to wee a lot.. One positive is that in Australia it doesnt cost much for the Mirena.. Looking forward to getting it out!! any other good contraception suggestions ?

milkymill · 02/10/2007 13:41

Yemma I had exactly the same physical feelings as you describe! I had put them down to the perforation, surely it's not meant to feel like that?

yemma · 02/10/2007 13:47

Hi milkymill, I had an ultra sound the other day and the Dr says its in the perfect position....I just hope this thing hasnt made me infertile.. that would be the icing on the negative mirena cake !!

milkymill · 02/10/2007 13:57

Maybe some of us just have a more sensitive cervix than others .

auntyspanonherbroomstick · 02/10/2007 14:26

I had a coil fitted after my last pg.

Good bits
periods nearly stopped
no PMT
Lots of worry free sex

Bad bits
Skin looked like a mouldy pizza

Skin was so bad I had the blardy thing taken out after 6 months. Skin cleared up after 6 months and now we're using wellingtons sorry, condoms.

Celery · 02/10/2007 14:34

I've mentioned it on previous threads, but I have a tilted womb and could feel the mirena digging into me for the 8 months I had it in. It obviously just didn't fit in there quite right, and sex was painful too.

That's aside from the hormonal side effects. . .

Celery · 02/10/2007 14:36

Funnily enough, my skin was beautiful with the Mirena, and horrendous now it's out.

auntyspanonherbroomstick · 02/10/2007 20:34

Gosh. The power of hormones (artificial or otherwise) never ceases to amaze me!

TheOriginalXENA · 02/10/2007 20:42

I went to have a mirena fitted but I have to much scarring (have had changed cells removed twice) so they wanted me to have a general a- I didn't go through with it

I've written a piece on this from my own experience. www.cupidstunt.org/?p=15 Maybe useful to some?
