Lisinopril for high BP

Anyone take it, any advice? Due to start this evening, pharmacist recommended at bed time first one in case I get dizzy. Does it really drop it that fast?

I think five weeks is completely doable, I get bloods done and rechecked within a couple of weeks of increasing a dosage, so if you push for an earlier recheck you should be fine. Just think of the people with undiagnosed hypertension that will be on those rides too!

MegCleary · 21/02/2020 14:59

Thanks @bodgeitandscarper you are keeping me from spiralling

Week of readings done and now 127/91 so a tad worse on increased meds 😞

Well spoke to practice nurse and she suggested adding amlodipine which really shocked me. When I said about what about increasing the lisinopril to 10mg and seeing if that helps as that’s the usual dose she said ok to try for a couple of months and that she wasn’t sure.
That’s really knocked my confidence that she she said she wasn’t used to doing this.
So too soon to see if it’s under control for Disneyworld as will only be on a few weeks she said Sad

Bump for advice

Don’t worry, you’ll just make it worse. Honestly, your BP is good, wish mine was that low & I've been on far higher doses of two for years. I take amlodipine as one & was on an ACE inhibitor , which fosinipril is, but was very allergic to it so was swapped onto Ibersartan, 200mg so much higher than you’re taking.
Once they get the dose right you’ll find it’s fine, so don’t worry. As I said mine’s always much higher than yours even on meds, once was hospitalised as it was 220/125 but I’m still here & doing fine!

MegCleary · 25/02/2020 19:44

Thanks for replying, I chatted to the pharmacist today and she said she could understand why another medication was suggested as it didn’t drop when I went from 2.5mg to 5mg. But that I could try the 10mg and if that didn’t work go back down to 2.5mg and add in the amlodipine. I probably shouldn’t have questioned the nurse but was horrified at the thought of needing two meds to control my b/p.

Almost everyone who takes meds for high BP take more than one type to get it properly under control often two but many people take three different ones

MegCleary · 25/02/2020 20:44

The learning curve is steep. I thought it would be tablet = all better Sad
Two make it seem worse and I understand that act differently, just not a good patient.

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 25/02/2020 22:37

I'm not on those tablets I'm on different ones and mine is sky high (being investigated). I went in a hydrotherapy pool the other day at a spa which had a warning for people with high blood pressure. I was ok!

MegCleary · 26/02/2020 12:40

I think I’m just an anxious person, also worried about having a health issue in the States and then they question my health insurance. I do get that I might be over reacting but it plays on my mind.

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 26/02/2020 12:43

It's making me anxious that mine is still sky high

MegCleary · 26/02/2020 13:09

What is it?

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 26/02/2020 13:17

I don't want to say I know it's sky high. It is the highest end

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 26/02/2020 13:30

I was diagnosed as a skinny 20 year old and have been on meds since then. I'm nearly 50 and have been on lisinopril for a while.

OP you're doing fine, honestly. Your BP is hugely better than when you started which means you're at far less risk of complications than you would have been had it stayed untreated.

MegCleary · 26/02/2020 19:17

Bless you @purpleme12 I hope you get it sorted soon. And yep am glad I know I have it just looking forward to being a bit lower and less headaches.

My dh is on Ramipiril for his pb. So that he gets a dose measured for the day he takes 3.75mg morning and again at night. Could that help by taking it that way ?

purpleme12 · 26/02/2020 20:26

@MegCleary thank you so much.

Darklane · 27/02/2020 21:23

Please try not to worry & be anxious, easier said than done I know but it really will just make it more likely to be high. You mostly can’t think of high BP as being like flu, something you can take a course of pills for & it will then disappear. For most people it’s something to be managed & it is manageable, honestly. Try to cut as much salt out of your diet as you can, the hidden stuff in pre prepared things as well as the white stuff. You get good at checking labels. And eat lots of fruit & veg, the potassium helps to counteract the sodium.
I too was always thin & healthy but I’ve had high BP since having pre eclampsia when pregnant in my twenties ( result of which is now in his forties!) so it is very livable with. Have you got one of those little home BP monitors? If you take it at home you’ll probably find it’s lower than at the doctor’s, white coat syndrome is very real. Take it three times, one after the other & you usually find it comes down each time as you real & don’t worry about what it’s going to say.

MegCleary · 29/02/2020 20:48

I do have a home monitor and use it pre visits for a week of readings and an average. I’m wondering now if I made a big mistake not starting the amlodipine. My headaches which had improved when I started the lisinopril are coming back again. Makes me doubt whether increasing the lisinopril will help. I know it’s only been a few days but guess what I know have that worrying me sigh.

I take amlodipine for genetic hbp. My bottom number has hardly come down, is always around 89 to 93. The top number meanwhile can go down to 126, and I get really dizzy. I get odema too, if on my feet too much, and recently the headaches that were the first indication of hbp, have returned. The gp shows no concern ‘amlodipine is first line med blah blah’

Well spoke to two different pharmacists and they recommend trying the amlodipine alongside the lisinopril but bringing the lisinopril back down to 5mg. Wish me well, sad to be on 2 bp meds but hoping it gets it sorted.

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 03/03/2020 19:00

Well I'm on 2 as well as from now. If you've got high blood pressure I think it's quite common to need more than one

MegCleary · 03/03/2020 19:23

@purpleme12 I hope yours is improving I know you were worried.
