I was prescribed these by the consultant for long term use about two years ago and I've seen recently that they are being stopped due to concerns over the link to cancer.

Has anyone who takes these swapped to an alternative? I was wondering if I should take it back to the pharmacy and ask?!

It's not all Ranitidine, just a few manufacturers, Omega Pharma, Perrigo, Galpharm (I think they're all the same one).
Batch nos and more info on

Gov UK site.
If you're still not sure you could phone pharmacist.

Yes swapped due to family history of stomach cancer. GP failed to mention the link to dementia (also family history) from the alternative (lemaprozole) ...

Sorry was thinking of omeprazole

wineandsunshine · 29/10/2019 16:10

Ahh brilliant Thankyou - I will check the manufacturer when I get five mins!

Will also ask when I'm due a repeat - I'm overthinking this a bit!!

Ah I didn’t know this. I keep putting in for a repeat prescription, but they never appear!! (Gp surgery isn’t fab at communication!). I’ve even tried buying the 75mg version from the supermarket and can’t find them!! Now I know!!

As for omeprazole, I’ve got some of this..it says to take first thing in the morning. Is this essential?! I always forget, then think I cannot take it with or after food etc so end up waiting another day!!

wineandsunshine · 29/10/2019 18:07

Well I checked my packet and it wasn't one made by the recall info Smile yay!

Re omeprazole - I thought it was to avoid milk when taking but I may have completely made that up!! I tried it years ago!

I take esomaprazole for GERD and hiatus hernia.

Well I checked my packet and it wasn't one made by the recall info yay!

That's good Smile.
Might be worth asking pharmacist if they automatically contact you about recalls for prescribed meds. In case other brands of dodgy Ranitidne are found.

All the information states that there is no problem with the 75mg tablets available over the counter. Different manufacturer.

Flossie44 · 29/10/2019 22:29

Oh that’s fab we can still get hold of the 75mg packets. Will look further for them

Ranitidine really cheap on Amazon.
