Adverse reaction to flu vaccine?

3ll3nor · 29/10/2019 14:06

Had the flu jab yesterday because I have a really weak immune system.

I had a bit of a cold/virus beforehand but today I feel 2 x as awful and the lymph nodes in my collarbone on the injection side have come up and feel sore - after the jab. They weren't up before.

Has anybody else experienced similar or other adverse reactions to the flu vaccine?

I always have my vaccine on my upper arm muscle. I am usually bruised for 3 days but I never had it while I was actually unwell.
I have forgotten whether the jab is a live one or not. Not had it yet due to suffering from radiotherapy side effects.
Some people do have some flu symptoms aterwards but again usually after not having had them before the jab.
Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you digerd,

I'm sorry you've been suffering from radiotherapy side effects, I hope you feel better soon too.

I had it on my upper right arm so the same area that you're used to having it.

I'm a worrier by after a recent health problems so feeling unusual lymph nodes tends to make me spiral

Whenever I have the flu jab (free, I'm 72), I'm always asked if I have any cold symptoms, I think they prefer you not to have a cold when you have the jab, maybe to due to your immune system already fighting an infection.

sore arm, and snuffles. not sure the snuffles are linked.

This year, after having the flu jab most of my adult life, I had my first negative reaction to it. I felt generally unwell and got a very bad rash and raised lump at the site of the injection and 3 days later, a pharmacist said I'd best be checked out at hospital. This year both parents also became ill after the flu jab with fever, sore throat, achiness despite them having the flu jab several weeks apart and not living together (I'm pointing out that they didn't catch it from each other). My Dad has had a chesty cough since the day after his flu jab 6 weeks ago and is going to see a GP soon. My mother is being referred to hospital next week over continued achiness, raised lymph nodes under collar bone and in arm pit and ongoing bouts of shiveriness (it's been going on for over 3 weeks). I'm ok although do have some swollen lymph nodes too.

Not sure what has happened this year bu we were all independently fine prior to the flu jab. This has never happened before.

Hope you are soon feeling better.

I think in hindsight I should have re-booked for when I felt %100

It was a very in and out appointment though with not much opportunity to discuss the vaccine.

The nurse administering the jabs was extremely busy (full clinic) and only asked me whether I had any allergies, did the jab and ushered me out.

I've done some research and found that a small number of people have reported having reactive lymph nodes after various flu vaccines over the years so that has reassured me a little.

The lymth nodes that have reacted are only about 5 or so inches from the injection site so it does appear to be linked somehow and not totally unheard of.

After hearing about the severity of influenza in others who've been unfortunate to have it then I'd much prefer this over that any day.

Haven't had it until now (25 years) and hope I never do

Crossed posts with you, CanThingsChange35

Reassured even further to hear from somebody else who has experience of the reactive lymph nodes after the vaccine, so thank you for sharing that with me.

I'm really sorry to hear that you and your parents have taken badly to it too Flowers

Yes our nodes are close to the injection site. Dr reassured me itwas a good thing apparently!

MitziK · 29/10/2019 16:02

Nah. As you were already feeling rough (I've got exactly the same thing at the moment by the sounds of it - and I had my flu jab in September - along with a significant number of kids at school complaining of similar over the last fortnight), it's probably purely coincidental.

It's not a live vaccine - I'm not able to have those due to being on biologics - either, so it's hugely unlikely it's anything other than the current bug you've got. It'll be gone in a day or so, as mine was, despite being immunocompromised.

3ll3nor · 29/10/2019 16:13

I'm immunocompromised too Mitzi, this time of year is the worst isn't it.

I hope you feel better soon too.

Whatever this bug is that I have at the moment has been loitering about for weeks. Fatigue, general feeling of unwellness, painful throat etc. I suspect it's viral.

Oh and an uncomfortable prickly sensation in my ears too! Envy

3ll3nor · 29/10/2019 16:16

Both DC's have had a runny nose, sporadic coughs and sneezing so it's likely the same thing that's impacting me albeit differently.

I had sepsis at the end of April and since then I've been a walking target for all the nasties. It wiped out my immune system and now when I catch something from somebody else it tends to drag on and morph into other symptoms.

MitziK · 29/10/2019 20:58

Thanks - I'm quite glad Sunday night's painful lump in the base of my throat (felt like I'd swallowed a crisp) has gone - when ears and palate start itching is when I say rude words and start necking all the home remedies I can get; ginger, orange, honey and lime 'tea', salt water gargles, etc.

I'm used to being the person with the shit hot immune system who is the Last One Standing when everybody else has been taken out - these biologics are great in terms of skin, gut, nails, joints, tendons, etc - but this bit (and the underlying 'should I go to the GP? They said anything, but it's only...') irritates me immensely. As does the part of my job that involves being around people who are talking about feeling ill, being sick, etc - I'm sure there's an element of psychological input for me, as I'm starting to feel queasy each time one of them says they're feeling sick.

Have you had any support since your sepsis? That must be very frightening to go through - would local IAPT services be worth looking into?

digerd · 04/11/2019 18:06

I had my flu jab today as still waiting for the OK or not from Cardiologist regarding my cancer biopsy under general anaesthetic to come.
Was told to wait 2 weeks before the immunisation took effect.
I have no muscles in my body and already have a swelling just a few hours afterwards and noticed the bruise when lifting my arm above shoulder level. Hope it goes away as quickly as it appeared.

Tisverycold · 17/11/2019 14:31

@CanThingsChange35 I was just wondering how your mum is getting on after being referred to the hospital with swollen lymphs in her collarbone? I'm the OP btw, mine are still there and I've been getting concerned, sometimes forgetting it coincided with the flu jab

lynsey91 · 17/11/2019 14:37

I had my flu jab yesterday and today have a sore arm and feel achy and very tired. I was fine beforehand and had not been out of the house for over a week before so no real way of catching anything.

I have had the jab twice before and didn't have any symptoms except for a sore arm one time

Tisverycold · 17/11/2019 14:55

I felt exactly the same the day after I had it Lynsey, it seems like there's a number of us reacting badly to this year's vaccine despite it not being live.

My arm was sore and achy for about a week and I was exhausted

Tisverycold · 17/11/2019 15:01

How are you Mitzy and Digerd?

lynsey91 · 17/11/2019 15:54

The Pharmacist that did mine said you can get mild symptoms after the jab.

I have done practically nothing all day and really would love to have just stayed in bed and slept!

Still rather feel like this than actually get the flu though. I had it in 2016 and it took me 6 weeks to get over it. The Pharmacist said that it was a particularly nasty strain that year
