Very first cold sore, I think.

I've become quite spotty the last two weeks around my chin. Might be my new skincare products I'm using, might be PCOS being a shitbag.

I developed what I thought was a spot on my lower lip, but now I'm wondering if it's a cold sore! I've never ever had one so assumed I was free from the dreaded herpes virus.
If it is a cold sore, does this mean I'm going to keep getting them? And why now at 40 years of age!? DP doesn't have one and neither do my DC and I don't go around snogging random strangers so what's this about?
DP says everyone has herpes but it usually just lies dormant. I've never heard this before. I thought you either have it or you don't.

I might be worrying over nothing and it might just be an infected horrible spot - I hope that's all it is anyway. But if it isn't a dirty old spot, what can I expect? I'm getting married in April I can't be getting cold sores then! 😩

Your DP is right. I think the stastic is thst something like 70% of the population have the herpes virus but most people don't know. If it is a coldsore and you can get some lysine tablets they help speed up the healing.

Thanks @EmmaC78 once you get one, do they keep coming? Or could I get one and then never again?

I think it depends on the person but i think if you are generally feeling run down they can appear. Definately try the lysine.

Lysine is brilliant for it. I get them about ten times a year Confused I’ve only just tired lysine and it’s been worth it.

Do you feel a Tingling?

Frazzlerock · 01/11/2019 14:49

It felt like when you get a spot. I've had several spots on my chin recently so assumed this was a lip spot as I've never had a cold sore before. It's still healing despite using lysine for about 3 days (thank you for the recommendation).
I honestly think its just an infected spot. I've not been near anyone with a cold sore and I don't kiss anyone except DP and the DC (and they don't get them either), even to say hello to friends. I'm not sure how I'd have got a cold sore, isn't it the herpes virus? I've never had any symptoms of it before. Just seems odd. So I will go with a spot I think!

Frazzle it can lie dormant in your system for years and flare up from nowhere. Anyone who carries the virus could potentially have an outbreak at any point (so as Emma says 70% of people).

I've never knowingly kissed anyone with a cold sore but there is such a thing as asymptomatic shedding of the virus, where it can be passed on when there are no symptoms.

I never had an outbreak until a few months after I gave birth to my DD. I think I must have carried the virus but it was dormant, but something about pregnancy or post pregnancy hormones must have triggered it.

I don't tend to get many outbreaks, if it happens it tends to be when I'm stressed. I sometimes use a bit of Zovirax when I think there's a chance one could appear.

You can also buy lysine lip balms which I use to try and prevent them.

Also healthy diet- high lysine foods and low arginine foods. Not loads of sugar.

Sunlight can also be a trigger. Or cold weather

Cold sores sting like hell, so hopefully it's not one. I used Zovirax and had about 2 in my live. No problem unless you are seriously run down
