Smear test result waiting time

twinkletoes33 · 24/10/2019 19:10

Can I ask how long roughly I should expect to wait for my smear results? I know there's been a delay but just wondered how long people have waited recently.... the wait makes me anxious!

Had mine back in less than 2 weeks (London) earlier this month.

LarkDescending · 26/10/2019 20:16

...but it wasn’t an “all clear” letter. I think those take longer.

loveskaka · 26/10/2019 20:25

I had mine last Friday, got the results today x

BelaLug0si · 26/10/2019 21:51

I work in a screening lab. We don't send the abnormal results out quicker than the negative results.

Thankyou for BelaLug - good to hear from someone that knows!

About 2 weeks in greater Manchester

Kittywampus · 26/10/2019 22:11

I had mine recently and was told it was a 10 week wait.

tobee · 26/10/2019 23:02

I had mine Monday 14th October, got letter yesterday so 11 days. London. All clear.

tobee · 26/10/2019 23:03

Pretty massive differences for people! Shock

Deucebumps · 26/10/2019 23:06

I was told I would hear within 6 weeks (Hampshire), called at week 7 and was told there's a backlog, my results came in the post during week 9

Cecilia2016 · 26/10/2019 23:16

I had mine done on 27th September and still no results yet and I was also tested for HPV

Cecilia2016 · 26/10/2019 23:16

I’m in Hampshire

han01uk · 26/10/2019 23:18

I had mine done 4th oct and had results within 2 weeks,in Cambridgeshire. Was told to expect 4-6 week for results.

earlynightneeded · 27/10/2019 10:13

I was told 12 weeks but they never actually called me with the results. I asked at my next drs appt for something else and they told me all clear

dementedpixie · 27/10/2019 10:16

Results normally come by post but are also sent to the surgery that did the test

IndieTara · 27/10/2019 13:02

I started a thread about this last week as I had my smear and was told it would be 10 weeks for results. When I queried this I was told it's because the number of labs that process them have been cut from 52 to 9

Unwrittenrule · 27/10/2019 13:36

Indie, that makes sense, my results always used to come from my local hospital but GP's told me recently they now come from one miles away in the nearest big city. It explains a lot if they've cut that many though, 9 for the whole country!! Shock

IndieTara · 27/10/2019 14:51

@Unwrittenrule shocking isn't it. I wonder if the same 9 labs process prostate results

wineandsunshine · 27/10/2019 16:54

Mine took about 6 weeks (Hampshire) - they have moved labs so the wait can be up to 9 weeks atm!

poppy289 · 27/10/2019 17:05

I was told 6 weeks at least but mine arrived in the post last Friday. 17 days later.

BelaLug0si · 27/10/2019 20:05

Prostate biopsies are processed by histology labs, not cytology. The biopsies are diagnostic - to work out if someone has cancer. It's not a screening test.
Cervical screening - over 80% of the results are normal.

BelaLug0si · 27/10/2019 20:07

It's actually going to be 8 labs because the lab in Surrey is covering two areas, the South East and South Central.
