Any dentists about? What is this white painful line?

Hello. I got my wisdom extracted about 9 days ago and I’ve been in pain ever since!! The procedure wasn’t as straight forward as originally planned (according to the dentist). It took her over half an hour to pull out my wisdom tooth and she had to get help from her colleague Blush. She said I should go under general as my teeth are so deep rooted.

I’ve been back to my own dentist several times complaining of the pain! It radiates to my ear and it’s so awful! Is this normal after 9 days? I’ve been given antibiotics which didn’t work, she’s packed the socket which somewhat helped but I’m still in pain! Been using salt water washes still, taking a cocktail of painkillers, everything! I’ve noticed this white painful line underneath my extracted wisdom tooth which hurts so much to even touch with my tongue! Does anyone have any idea what it could be? I will go back to the dentist but any help would be great!

Thanks Smile

That looks like an ulcer, maybe where the skin was damaged during the extraction. I always get an ulcer if I scratch the gum, and they can be very painful.
I may be wrong though, I am not a dentist.

Not a dentist but your nerves are dangerously close to your wisdom teeth and it may have been damaged, did she take xrays before she extracted it? If they’re deep rooted then she should’ve seen it in the X-ray and referred you to hospital for the extraction instead.

If you feel feverish or run down at all between now and seeing a different dentist you need to visit a&e immediately.

Also look up dry-socket as it may be an issue with that. Or she’s damaged your jaw bone during the extraction 😰

Hi Sir. I did think that but would mouth ulcers hurt so much? I hope it’s something as simple as that, I’d love to find an answer for my pains!

Hi mum. Yes, the dentist did do x rays prior to the surgery. It was done at the hospital - not the dentist practice. I am going to see a different dentist as I feel like I’m getting nowhere with this one Confused

As mum said, do look up dry socket - I've had that twice, it's awful and very painful.

Silvercatowner · 24/10/2019 07:42

It's not abnormal to be in pain for a while after wisdom teeth extraction, particularly if the teeth were embedded in the bone, which it sounds like yours were of you needed the procedure done at the hospital.

Daffodils07 · 24/10/2019 09:57

Dry socket most likely, that white looks like where they had put the local in (injections).
I had the same and it took about 4 weeks to be pain free.

SirVixofVixHall · 24/10/2019 09:58

The pain is probably a combination of factors, the white patch looks like ulceration, then you could also have pain from any number if the things mentioned above. I hope it eases up soon, and that the new dentist is helpful.

katielilly · 24/10/2019 21:09

Looks like trauma ulceration. Nothing sinister, hope you feel better soon. Can take a couple of weeks to resolve.

Hi. Thought I’d give an update as I found it so annoying that no one ever followed up on these things. I went to the dentist several times and she couldn’t find anything abnormal and told me to continue using salt water mouth washes. I went against her advice and decided to stop using salt water mouth washes and see if that made a difference. It did! I brushed my teeth twice a day like I normally do & flossed. I continued to take neurofen (sp?) and within a day or two - that awful pain radiating from the white ulcer thing stopped and my socket is finally beginning to close. I’ve started to have full night’s sleep without being woken up by the pain Smile. I don’t know if it was just a coincidence that my pain stopped shortly after I stopped using saltwater mouth washes but it’s worth a try if you’re in pain two weeks after the surgery.

So glad I ignored her advice! I was getting worried by the amount of pain relief I was taking Shock thanks for your help guys

Thank you. I am going on holiday this weekend and was genuinely dreading that I couldn’t eat all of the yummy food!
