Fibroids and getting pregnant

SIL has just been told she has Fibroids and is very upset as she is sure she can't have kids now. She had a sterilation done about 9 years ago, while with her ex and has now re-married, they were hoping to try IVF which her best mate will be paying for, but now she is sure that she won't be able to do this, I know that people have had Fibroids removed and concieved afterwards and am sure she will be able to through with the IVF, has anyone had a baby afterward Fibroids, or had IVF? Thanks

My friend has a fibroid & is currently 20 weeks pregnant with her second child. She had no problems conceiving either time. I don't know about IVF though. Good luck to your SiL.

It all depends on the position of the fibroid. Some will cause more problems than others - eg some might mean you would have to have a c-section, some might not be a problem at all in PG. She will have I think to try and get in touch with her gynae to find out what their advice is.

Great friend of mine had a tum full of fibroids and her son is now just over 2. She had to have a c-section as there were more fibroids than baby. Me with endo, her with fibroids - both now proud mums. Definitely success stories out there. Good luck.

I have a couple of small fibroids, one of which grows dramatically while I'm pregnant. It is situated at the top of my uterus though, so childbirth can be natural.

By the way I have 2 kids, and I'm currently expecting twins - I have no trouble getting pregnant!!

I would think the sterilisation would have more problems to overcome...

Thats what I thought, she wanted to have the sterilation reversed but was told the form of sterilation she had can't be reversed so was going to try IVF, now she thinks that she can't have IVF as she think the fibroids will make her infertile, now the info. I have read says that some fibroids can make you infertile IF left, but as the doc wants to remove them, surely she has a good chance of trying IVF. I think that she heard "infertile" and didn't register the rest of the info.

She needs to find out more about the fibroids. Like Smellymelly, I have a big one that does not affect either my fertility, my pregnancies (apart from pain when it twisted) or the births. Crucially, it is outside my uterus, and nowehere near the cervix.

Put very crudely, external fibroids generally have very little effect, internal fibroids can affect every aspect of pregnancy (though that doesn't mean that they necessarily do so) but are relatively easily removed. Fibroids that are within the uterus wall are more complex.

Do reassure your sil and send her back for more info.

I didn't know about my fibroid until I got pregnant.AFAIK, it didn't affect my fertility- conceived about a year after I stopped taking the pill. I did have to have a section, though, as my fibroid is near the cervix, and for the same reason wasn't able to have a Mirena coil inserted.
