Has anyone had experience of this please?
If so, how did it manifest itself ?
I've been on two long flights in succession.
Arrived home.
I woke up during the night with a horrible cramp in my leg. I could hardly put my foot down on the floor.
It feels like a pulled muscle after exercising but I haven't been exercising.
It's still sore almost 12 hours later.
I don't want to waste a doctor's time if it's just a sore calf muscle and it costs €65 to go to the doctors here in Irelamd .
Thank you for reading.

Is there swelling? I would get it checked I'm afraid.

averylongtimeago · 23/10/2019 14:14

Is the area hot to touch, red or swollen?
If so, get it checked.
A few years ago my ankle swelled up, skin was red and hot, also painful. I thought it might be an infected insect bite.
It wasn't- get it checked op

You need checking out to rule it out, if left untreated it can develop into a pulmonary embolism and can be very serious!

Symptoms of DVT

In some cases, there may be no symptoms of DVT. If symptoms do occur they can include:

  • pain, swelling and tenderness in one of your legs (usually your calf)
  • a heavy ache in the affected area
  • warm skin in the area of the clot
  • red skin, particularly at the back of your leg below the knee

DVT usually (although not always) affects one leg. The pain may be worse when you bend your foot upward towards your knee.

Pulmonary Embolism

-If left untreated, about 1 in 10 people with a DVT will develop a pulmonary embolism.

A pulmonary embolism is a very serious condition that causes:

  • breathlessness – which may come on gradually or suddenly
  • chest pain – which may become worse when you breathe in
  • sudden collapse

Both DVT and pulmonary embolism require urgent investigation and treatment.

Thank you for your answers.
I know DH will throw his eyes up to heaven if I say I should go to the doctors and consider it a total waste of money.

@soreleglady I had a DVT and it was like a really really bad pulled muscle in my thigh, and I couldn’t walk on it. When I got in the bath and looked down, my leg was noticeably swollen.

Teacakeandalatte · 23/10/2019 17:01

Go to the Dr and don't even ask dh if he doesn't even care you could have a life threatening condition he is rubbish.

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 23/10/2019 17:02

When I had DVT it felt like a pulled muscle, which gradually got worse. In the end I could not put weight on that leg. The affected leg looks swollen when compared to the other. The doctor that examined me use a tape measure to compare the girth of the two legs. I was admitted into hospital straight away. Can you do the tape measure thing yourself ?

soreleglady · 23/10/2019 17:17

I'll do that ItsReallyOnlyMe.

My husband had this. He ignored the pain and redness, but then started getting breathless too, then finally saw a doctor. He's OK now but the dvt was quite bad so he's now on warfarin for life.
I take it you're not in UK if you are talking about paying for doctor?

soreleglady · 23/10/2019 17:56

Im in Ireland so we pay for doctor's visits if we don't have a medical card.

I think it would really be worth the money, if you can Flowers DH's dvt was very scary. Forgot to say, he had it twice. First time was just a short course of warfarin but once you've had it a second time they seem to put you on it indefinitely. Like a PP, following his doctor's appointment he was sent to the hospital straight away both times for scans. It's not something to mess around with.

soreleglady · 23/10/2019 21:29

ItsReallyOnlyMe
I measured both my calves and the sore one is not bigger than the other one so it's not swollen.
I just would hate to waste a doctor's time on something trivial.
It's probably just a coincidence.
If it gets so sore thst I can't put my foot down like ItsReallyOnlyMe, I'll go to the doctors.
It seems to be easing.
Thanks again all those who replied.

I've had dvt, I complained about my right leg for 14 years to my gp, they found it having a cat scan for something else. Got one of those phone calls from the hospital, come in now, but wouldn't tell me why. Six months on warfarin and oddly my right calf is an inch bigger than the left, clot was in my thigh.

Blahblahblahnanana · 23/10/2019 22:42

Swelling really isn’t the only symptom of a DVT. If left untreated the blood clot can break off and travel to your lungs and can be fatal.

Cramp although common can be a symptom of a DVT.

Gingaaarghpussy · 23/10/2019 23:11

I know you say it's expensive, but why put yourself at risk?

I ignored my symptoms, the 2nd time, having had one when I was pregnant with my son. I knew it was a dvt deep down, but still spent a week googling. By the time I went to the drs my entire leg was in pain. The dr had to call an ambulance, because I couldn't get to hospital any other way. They did an ultra sound scan and it was in my groin, if I'd have left it any longer it would have travelled either to my lungs or heart, my grandmother died from an embolism in her lungs.
Even now 4 years later, if I walk too much my foot swells.

FarTooFat · 24/10/2019 11:18

I went to A&E as the pain in my calf hadn't improved after 2 or 3 days, which if it was a strain, I knew it would have done. I had had an op on my leg that meant cutting the blood off while it was done, and it had taken longer than they thought, so I felt a DVT was a possibility.

The A&E doc measured my calf and looked at it. It wasn't larger, it wasn't redder, it wasn't hotter. He sent me home. It was only that it had been referred to the DVT clinic and they called me that I went back in. They insisted on giving me a precautionary blood-thinning jab and my calf was scanned. It was a DVT.

Please go.

soreleglady · 24/10/2019 13:09

Thank goodness it's not sore today so I think it was just a coincidence.
Thank you so much for all your concerned replies.
