Its mainly in between my neck and right shoulder, the pain feels quite deep and is throbbing. i managed to get a last minute massage this morning which eased it and I feel less hunched and can move freely but the pain has come back worse tonight. I’ve been taking Ibuprofen and applied deep heat gel and one of those microwaveable wheat bags but the pain is wearing me down. Obviously its sunday tomorrow so no chance of anyone seeing me tomorrow any advice please as just sat here crying like a baby 😓

Sorry your hurting. I have a bad neck and I always prefer cold. Do you have any frozen peas? Place in a ziplock plastic bag incase of leaks.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 12/10/2019 20:34

Yes is cold better then heat?? I will try anything

I've suffered with shoulder and neck pain for years. Keep moving, keeping arm still makes it worse. Can you do any gentle stretches, look some up on YouTube? Have you got a small hard round object you can position on a wall and lean against to self massage the area? Or a vibrator you can lie on top of in the right spot? Keep up with meds, so they stay constant in system. Tiger balm neck and shoulder rub can be good for tense muscles, but not so good for an actual injury. I see an osteopath, who does a mixture of massage, physio, manipulation and even acupuncture depending on what's causing the pain. Hope it eases off soon.

Can you get to a pharmacy for some cocodamol or solpadeine. Those will be stronger than the ibuprofen.

Thelittleblackdog · 12/10/2019 20:46

I get very bad back and neck pain, to the point my DH has had to drive me to urgent care at 2am for pain relief as paracetamol & ibroprofen weren't touching the sides. I find Syndol (available over the counter at pharmacy) is really effective, contains codeine.

Thelittleblackdog · 12/10/2019 20:46

Deep heat spray also helps me a lot. Hope you feel better soon!

OhTheRoses · 12/10/2019 20:50

Okay, ypu can take ibuprofen and paracetamol together, or ibhprofen at 9am, (with food), paracetamol at 11am, ibu at 1pm, para at 3pm, etc.

I find warm better than cold, the heat pads you buy and can stick on are good, lezs heavy than a wheatie. Feather pillows supporting neck are good too, rather than synthetic ones that put yr neck at an angle.

Physio to help release the tension asap. Pay for it.

Poor you. Hopefully on Monday yr gp will prescribe some naproxen which is stronger than ibuprofen

Try to rest as much as poss.

Which shoulder? I had agonising pain in my right shoulder which turned out to be referred pain from an inflamed liver. GP sent me away with pain killers so I went to see an Osteopath who could find nothing wrong with my neck or shoulder but could feel that my liver was enlarged and sent me back to GP for anitbiotics.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 12/10/2019 20:56

Thank you dh just came back from pharmacy but they wouldn’t give any apart from stronger Ibuprofen. The pain is so draining making me feel sick 😐

If the pain is making you feel sick - A&E? At least they may be able tongive you a collar.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 12/10/2019 21:04

you can get paracetamol with codeine ...maybe pharmacy only but it was recommended to me to go with diclofenac when I had frozen shoulder issues,

so you can take that with ibuprofen as you cannot get diclofenac anymore.

alternate them....(sort of) your ibuprofen is two, three times a day and your paracetamol is 2 four times a day. If you get teh timings right you are never more than a couple of hours away from a top up! I tend to do the ibuprofen with food and winkle the others in between

If you have a Vpillow then wedge yourself into that, head on the apex with one v arm in front and the other behind....it really helps keep you still and helps to prevent any twisting that will wake you

Could it be torticollis? DD had it once, and was given a muscle relaxant. The spasms were very painful.

LemonPrism · 12/10/2019 21:53

Epsom salt bath and roll a ball on it for a while. Go to the GP if persistent

PavlovaFaith · 12/10/2019 22:01

Definitely cold for sharp pain Sad snap but mine is bottom left.

SinkGirl · 12/10/2019 22:09

Oh bless you. I don’t understand why the pharmacist wouldn’t sell you anything else - are you on other medication?

Send someone in the morning to buy some Paramol (which is paracetamol and dihydracodeine) and some voltarol gel which is an anti-inflammatory - you take the Paramol instead of paracetamol and use the gel instead of taking ibuprofen.

If it’s just not bearable, call 111 for an OOH appointment. They can prescribe a low dose of muscle relaxants for a couple of days - I have to do this about every six months when my upper back really goes nuts and into spasm.

I prefer heat (I have a large electric heat pad which is awesome) but alternating heat and cold helps - a hot shower directed on the area may give you some relief. If you have a tennis ball or similar, put it between your back and the wall and use that to massage the area.

It’s absolutely awful, I’m sorry you’re in so much pain.

Is this new? Do you have any other symptoms? I did have referred pain in my upper back when I had a gallbladder infection and pancreatitis years ago but it also hurt at the front and in my ribs. Just thought I’d mention it. If you feel sick, have a fever, are vomiting or it’s worse after eating then I would get checked out.

I get a cool gel with diclofenic in it from the chemists (not prescription but from the chemists so might be OTC or off the shelf can't remember which) otherwise I find using heat and cold back to back helps, so peas or ice pack or deep freeze gel for a bit, have a stretch, then a lovely hot shower or bath (depending where it is) and another stretch. I find sometimes lying completely flat with no pillow can help or sleeping on my front. Otherwise co-codomol (solpadeine) or co-dydramol (paramol) and if it really wont shift diazepam (anti-spasmodic so works as a muscle relaxant) or stronger doses of codeine or dihydracodeine with or without paracetamol (and sometimes with an NSAID like naproxen or diclofenic tablets, but obviously don't double up with the gel) which you need a doctors prescription for. If THAT doesn't work, then chiropractor because NHS aren't great with backs.
