7 mth old dd has been having a low-grade fever since yesterday, but everytime i give her calpol (which she has taken before as a 2 and 3 mth old with no problems whatsoever) she vomits it out along with all the milk she had before that. any tips???

Two ideas:

Bring her fever down by wrapping her legs in cold (but not too cold - just a bit colder than normal body temperature) wet flannels and then over the top of the flannels wrap with muslin squares. It brings a fever down really fast and is the traditional german way of handling a fever.

You can also ask your chemist for calpol suppositories, which is an easier way of delivering accurate doses of such drugs to babies and is also the favoured way of the germans (had my baby in Germany - can u tell?). They aren't difficult to insert to about the first knuckle of your little finger (and at 7mths the baby won't mind the different delivery method), just use a bit of moisturiser and hold in for a little bit then hold bum cheeks together for a little bit. Good Luck.

Use a blob of vaseline on the end and hold her legs up while you do it ! It really doesn't hurt them although it seesm a bit odd to begin with. Just watch for the reflex to expel it immediately so squeeze her buttocks together for a few seconds after putting it in.

If she only has a low grade fever, maybe you should just leave it and try to keep her cool with light clothing and covers. My dd used to vomit capol and cough medicine, so I just don't give it to her when she has a fever.

thanks everyone for the helpful advice..
her fever turned for the worse when i came back from work friday, went up to 39.5 from only 38 that day! so rushed her to emergency that night. doc inserted suppositories and within 2 hrs, the fever went down! am now armed with a stash of suppositories for future use!
i think she still has a low fever now tho..but my b**dy armpit thermometer is really useless. is there a danger in dd having a low fever for 4 days?

what was the cause of the high fever?

my dd got tonsillitis very regularly, from about 5 months. as her temp was so high, she would vomit til she could vomit no more, and that would include calpol. i used to bathe her and mop her down to keep the anti biotics in long enough to work so that i could then start using calpol.

from about the age of 7, she refused to have anything to do with calpol as there was the sick association. (she had tonsils and adenoids out at 5).

dont know, rosies, doc said that if she still had high fever on sunday to bring her in for a blood test. am in the tropics so could mean dengue fever! but her fever is not too high, so dunno whether i shud bring her in. maybe i'll check again when i get back from work today and if it high, give the hospital a call?

she doesn't vomit regularly, only about once a day, and even then, only after a dose of calpol (maybe its too sickly sweet for her innocent throat??)

i now mix it in with her babyrice and veg and she keeps it down better that way.

what shud i do

hazlinh, why don't you try another brand besides calpol, or maybe try nurofen instead. I personally can't stand the taste of Calpol (I think it has licorice in it and even the smell of licorice makes me vomit).

hazlinh · 28/09/2004 05:48

yeah, sofiames, i think thats a good idea. am trying some other generic brand now.

talked to the pediatrician last night, in a desperate moment cos dd suddenyl developed a rash all over her body and face! thot it was measles. he didnt sound pleased to have been disturbed (sounded like he was awoken from sleep)
he reckons dd has roseola. her case does fit the typical roseola description. several days of fever, then very high fever of 39.5 and above, followed by a rash just as the fever breaks! dd's fever is almost gone now.and he says no need to worry abt it, it'll disappear within 2 days by itself!

the rash, that is, will disappear

sorry rosies, didn't see this til today! yep, that website was good. she's totally recovered, the rash mysteriously disappeared by itself as it says it would!
thanks

I love suppositories now Aussiesim! Have a whole stash tucked away for emergencies!!
