Glandular fever help/advice!

Hi! So I have glandular fever and was just wondering what people’s thoughts are about me being able to go clubbing. My uni friends have been out all the time for two weeks while I’ve been in bed unable to move and I’m feeling better this week but am aware you shouldn’t do strenuous exercise with gf but I’m not sure if just dancing counts? Also because I’m supposed to get loads of bed rest so I’m worried that going out will set me back abit but I’m getting real fomo and jealous of everyone going out without me. I know it’s advisable to not drink alcohol just yet so I’m not but I’d still love to go on nights out with my friends!

Thanks for reading hope it all makes sense.

It depends so much on you.
I had glandular fever and did go out and things. But I definitely deteriorated over the course of the day. I'd wake up fine, by midday I was exhausted, and by 4pm my temperature was well up and climbed steadily from there.
I did go out and drink, party, played tennis etc but I took well over a year to recover even halfway, and some things I've never got fully back over 20 years later. So I do wonder if I'd been more careful-or at any rate realised I had glandular fever so I knew, whether I would have recovered easier.

Otoh person I knew who was diagnosed at a similar time didn't have much worse than a bad cold and sore throat.

As op said it's very individual. If you feel ok, go. Most likely you'll be fine! If not feeling 100% don't as you'll feel even worse after. I couldn't get out of bed for 5 months and was pretty much asleep the entire time and when I was awake everything hurt but my friend had it a few months later and just had a sore throat, it was by chance they found out it was that as they were testing for something else.

With GF the key thing is that your Spleen is likely to be enlarged - so you should avoid any activity for at least 2 months which could result in an injury. If you don't it could be very nasty.
Clubbing doesn't fall into that category - but my DD had to have a big rest from horseriding.

The next thing is that you may have a much lower tolerance to alcohol. Ideally I would avoid it all together - but certainly be aware that you may have a much lower "capacity".
Then the chronic exhaustion - which can descent very fast. So you need to be prepared and able to take a cab home quickly.

My DD had a month in which she barely moved from the Sofa, but I don't think she had the energy to feel jealous of others clubbing, so you probably don't have it as bad as she did.

Yeah, it’s weird. I had three awful weeks where getting out of bed was out of the question but I’m feeling better and not particularly dealing with the extreme fatigue that everyone goes on about. I am generally very tired but that’s no different to before I had it. Thanks for your advice!

I think I must have had a very mild case then!! I thought I had the worst tonsillitis I ever had and couldn’t eat for 48 hours, was bed bound for 2-3 weeks and I thought that was bad! I’m so sorry to hear you couldn’t get out of bed for five months that sounds awful!!!

@Witchend thankyou for your advice! It’s a really tricky illness to get the hang of because I don’t even feel too poorly anymore but it doesn’t mean that I am 100% bettter!

I was poorly for ages after glandular fever. For several months I was permanently exhausted and had repeated infections.

It was odd because I was ill for a few months then recovered. 8 months later I went downhill very quickly, was hospitalised and a blood test confirmed GF so it looks like it reoccurred which is unusual.

Absolutely do not drink, don't push yourself too much as you'll get tired quickly and listen to your body. Don't forgot that you could still be contagious and you really don't want to pass this around uni. I caught mine off a very cute lad.
