Piles and a REALLY sore bum! Anyone medical got any good advice?

i have had piles on and off since my first dc 5 years ago. i was given anusol which was rubbish and didd nothing. since then they have flared up and i have often had a rectal bleeding.

i know i shouldn't have dismissed the bleeding but it was bright red so hopefully nothing sinister.

anyway, last week i had a tummy upset and ended up on the loo every half hour or so, needing to go but not able to fully. my poor bum is so sore and inflamed now and the piles are really throbbing, so much so that i can't sit straight and driving is a nightmare.

i have done the sensible thing and have made a gp appointment for tomorrow but i just want to know what to expect. will he examine me? i think he ought to but i will probably have to take the dcs with me! Quelle embarass!!

in the meantime, what advice has anyone for easing the discomfort and throbbing?

(also, is being overweight a factor in recurrent piles?)

long post, sorry if TMI!

try sudocrem on your sore bum lol, it will be sore because of all the extra wiping as for the piles did u use the anusol regulary? it worked a treat for me i dont think weight ahs anything to do with piles, they are to do with pressure, IE straining for a poo, babies heads pressing down there...

alipiggie · 13/08/2007 19:23

Over here in the US you can get great witch hazel wipes for everytime you go to the toilet. Is there something similar there, they're very soothing.

bristols · 13/08/2007 19:28

Being overweight is a factor in recurrent piles, as well as straining and having babies.

Ask your doctor about a cream containing local anaesthetic called Xyloproct. That should give you some relief. I think it very likely that the doc will want to examine you. Hopefully your DCs will stay on the other side of the curtain!!

MyPoorSoreBum · 13/08/2007 19:35

thanks all for your advice. i think my poor bum is sore from wiping, i bought some of those "moist" wipes, which help, maybe like the witch hazel ones, if not as soothing. i do have suducrem but wasn't sure about using it on bums (but then it is used for nappy rash so, d'uh!!)

i was thinking about sitting on a teatowel filled with frozen peas, but that may raise dh's eyebrows, i am trying to retain some feminine mystique in all of this, and failing...

it has got worse and so i am now sitting with my dcs frozen "boo-boo buddy", wrapped in a muslin cloth clamped between by butt-cheeks, watching big brother.

oh the glamourous life i lead..

How did you get on at the docs?

startouchedtrinity · 14/08/2007 21:16

I had this b/c of pg with ds (no 3). You really need to keep you rpoo soft. If still constipated get some lactulose from the chemist. Am hoping the doc gave you proctosedyl (sp?) to put on your sore bits.

Piles are every bit as bad as dental abscesses for pain IMO.

MyPoorSoreBum · 15/08/2007 14:48

thanks for your interest in my bum!

i was very embarassed but the doctor looked at it, didn't examine as he said it would be too sore for me . he confirmed it was piles and despite my protesting that anusol didn't work, he prescribed anusol hc and a big stack of fibregel to take twice daily. i wish i had the confidence to ask for procto-wotsit but i hadn't.

he did concur with all who said that preventative diet and lifestyle help, keeping hydrated, fibre-ful diet and regular exercise.

oh, and positively no straining on the loo. i think that will be the hardest bit!

he said to go back and see him in 2-3 wks after i have given everything a chance to take effect.

You really need suppositories I'm afraid. Those were the only thing that worked with me.

saffymum · 15/08/2007 14:52

I highly recommend you review your diet and start eating high fibre bran every morning with natural bio yogurt which will help soften and therefore not much straining!

MyPoorSoreBum · 15/08/2007 14:54

my diet IS rubbish and i know that on the occasions when i have a health kick, my whole digestive system improves.

i only have myself to blame really!

I found a really great fibre replacement powder in Morrisons yesterday, you just add a teaspoon a few times a day to a drink or soft food eg yogurt. Maybe try that, I found it in the vitamins and med section. Dammit, I didn't bring the box with me, will get the name for you, its in a green box of 7 sachets to try it out and then you can buy a big bottle.

I'll get the name and post it tomorrow.

startouchedtrinity · 16/08/2007 09:27

Lactulose is much better if you are really constipated. Bran type fibre can make things worse unless you drink loads of water. You need a diet high in fruit and veg. I'm veggie so only have a problem when pg.

MyPoorSoreBum · 16/08/2007 19:12

i know its the cornerstone of everything relating to good health, but does anyone else find driking loads of water a total drag??!

i blame when i did a food replacement diet for 5 wks and could only drink shakes and water, 5 litres a day of the stuff!

thanks for your advice all, i will try my best for the sake of my bahookie!
