Lump in Breast = panic

Bex1517 · 01/10/2019 19:09

Hi there. I'm 33 have massive health anxiety always panic about everything. Well a few weeks ago I thought I found a lump in my breast but couldn't find it again despite poking till is hurt. Then I found it again. Went to dr today at first she couldn't feel it then she did... says it's very cyst like and will be putting on referral that she thinks most likely benign and she isn't worried she says she'd tell me if she was. But she's still referring me anyway! And she said it would still be classes as urgent.

So basically my word has just fallen out my arse and I keep thinking about my two boys (2 and 4) not having mummy.... someone come and give me a shake!

It's entirely usual to mark any lumps and lumpy bits as urgent. In my area/case I got seen within two weeks, mammogram and consultation. Two cysts discovered with an option to drain. Haven't as yet.

Hope you get seen speedily and best of luck

Bex1517 · 01/10/2019 19:47

@dontdoxmeeither thank you for your comment 🙂. Just so so sick with worry. I have cysts on my head so hoping I'm just a cysty person 😩

Welcome Smile

My sister has recurring cysts and has them regularly drained. We are the complete opposite physically. She's blond, blue eyed, big breasted and I'm brunette, brown eyed and smaller breasted so I was really fretting that mine may be unwelcome news. But no, cysts also!

Good luck, will you update how you get on? Will be thinking of you Thanks

HenSolo · 02/10/2019 10:28

Please don’t worry. They refer most breast lumps under the urgent referral and 9/10 are nothing - especially likely as your doctor has said she doesn’t think it’s anything. In my case the gp was extremely concerned by my lump and it was absolutely fine.
Waiting is excruciating I know Flowers

Celebelly · 02/10/2019 10:32

I'm 33 too and had a huge lump when 37 weeks pregnant (golf ball size). Turned out to be a benign cyst that they drained. Apparently they're quite common. But it's scary feeling something there that shouldn't be there! Try not to worry - the consultant was pretty confident after just feeling it that it was a cyst, and the whole thing was done quickly (I went private in the end due to timing but my hospital referral came through for two weeks' time)

Bex1517 · 02/10/2019 10:33

Thanks @dontdoxmeeither and @HenSolo. I keep saying to hub maybe she said that to me cause she knows I'd freak but he says a Dr wouldn't do that 🥴. I really want to calm down and be a bit more positive. Struggling at the minute tho.

I've got an urgent appointment for the breast clinic next week. I think even the least anxious person might have a wobble while they wait, op. After testing, apparently 9 in 10 women don't have breast cancer so I'm repeating this on loop - I'm not sure it helps but it's a distraction of sorts.

Bex1517 · 02/10/2019 10:44

@Baguetteaboutit hope all goes well for you! I live in Scotland. Dr said could be around 4 weeks till I get appointment. More time to freak out about it!

Thanks Bec, you too Flowers

Baguetteaboutit · 02/10/2019 11:26

Bex, sorry.

sweetheart · 02/10/2019 11:31

I had a referral last year too. I'm pretty sure all referrals are classed as urgent because they have a government standard they have to meet - Ie all patients must be seen within 2 weeks.

Obviouly I was a little anxious waiting for my appointment but the Dr had said the same to me - probably nothing to worry about but worth getting checked.

There were about 20 other women waiting for scans the same morning as me. Judging by their reactions ( leaving the room smiling - little sighs of relief etc) I don't think a single one of them got bad news- including me. And no horrible waits for test results - if it's a cyst they can tell you then and there.

Try not to stress / panic too much, As people have said it's almost certainly nothing to worry about.

Bex1517 · 02/10/2019 11:34

@sweetheart thank you for that. Sounds like it's pretty common then. I'm such a worse case scenario person. I need to get a grip! Glad everything was ok with you ☺️

I was at the breast clinic on Monday. Same scenario. Felt a lump but it was a slippery little bugger. Doctor found it again and referred me.

Turns out it was a cyst (2.5cm) with another one attached and I have several more. Theyve drained the big one but think I'll end up a returning customer.

Please try to distract yourself, the people at the clinic are amazing x

Bex1517 · 02/10/2019 11:38

@EhWhatPardon thank you for that! Glad you are ok. I've got two weeks coming off coming up now which couldn't come at a worse time as at least when I'm working I have the distraction. My two boys will hopefully keep me busy busy! I keep being reassured then thinking what if...

Thank you @Celebelly ☺️

@Bex1517 completely normal. The doctor told me it was a cyst but I still filled my head with all the "what ifs".

Who will go to the appointment with you? X

Bex1517 · 03/10/2019 08:08

@EhWhatPardon I'm hoping my husband will come with me. I usually go to hospital appointments myself. I had a sigmoidoscopy in May and went to that by myself.

Had a bit of a melt down this morning. I really am trying to be positive but I just can't! 😞

OP posts:
MustardScreams · 03/10/2019 08:14

@Bex1517 the time between finding a lump and the results of the tests are horrendous, because you have absolutely no idea if it’s ok or not, you mind totally runs away with you. I think if you ask anyone that has cancer they’ll agree that the waiting and not knowing is the worst part.

It’s also ok to not be ok! Everyone will tell you it will be fine, and in all likelihood you absolutely will (90% of all breast lumps are benign) but you can have a panic, or worry as much as you want to. It’s human nature.

Bex1517 · 03/10/2019 08:52

@MustardScreams thank you. I actually want to chill and just get on with life. But this is just all I can think about. It's driving me nuts. My dr even said that it could be 4 weeks before I even get an appointment. 🙄

OP posts:
EhWhatPardon · 03/10/2019 10:01

@Bex1517 4 weeks? Shouldn't you only have to wait 2??

My husband came, he was allowed in the initial consultation but had to wait in the waiting room during the mammogram and ultrasound.

As someone said.. it's ok not to be ok. We can all be there for a handhold x

Bex1517 · 03/10/2019 10:06

@EhWhatPardon I think because the dr was going to be putting on her report that she thinks it's a cyst and it's benign she said they might make it a 4 week appointment

I have constant ache in my breast and while feeling found a lump under one of my glands round the nipple. Was referred for a breast scan within 2 weeks, the doctor examined me and the lump had gone, so I didn't even need the scan. They said it was hormonal. Please try not to panic, the chances of it being something else are quite high.
