my 2 year old daughter choked and snored a lot during sleep, she hs VERY largetonsils, i.e they meet in the middle, she had a overnight pulse oximetry which showed her oxygen SAT's dropped to 82% as she hs obstructive sleep apnea because of the size of her tonsils, they booked her in for her adenoids and tonsils out in 4 weeks, which was wed, BUT she came down with really bad tonsilitus, so bad in fact she ended up on the High Dependancy unit at the hospital on oxygen (her SAT's were 70%), they tried to put a feeding tube down the back of her nose, but got stuck on her adenoids which bled quite profusely. In the end she had a IV fitted and was on a drip for 16 hours, it was just that painfull she couldn't drink and got severly dehydrated. she soon picked up. She's on antibiotics for a couple more weeks, they ideally wnated to sen us home with a breathing tube and oxygen for at night, but it was impossible to put a breathing tube in because of damage to her tonsils and adenoids. and now they are referring her to sheffield children's hospital for her tonsils and adenoids out, as they say they say she is very very young to have this op. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience of this hospital, if anyon's child has had this op so young, or at all and what can i expect? and how can i help her deal with this tonsilitus in the mean time?

thankyou for your help.

No ideas re your question rachael, but I didn't want to leave it unanswered. I am in Sheffield, there are lots of us in this neck of the woods. Hopefully someone with a bit more experience will along soon to answer your question

Sorry, no experience of the operation or the hospital, although I am in the city.

The children's hospital does have a very good reputation though

I know Katz has had a fair bit of dealing with the hospital with her youngest DD, although not for operations. She's on holiday for another couple of days. I'll try to remember to point her towards this thread.

Hope your little one is feeling better soon.

Hi
Dont know if this will be of any help but here goes.
dd1 had a respiratory arrest with enlarged tonsils when she was 2.
Like you we went through all the pulse oximeter readings overnight to see if her sats dropped ect-but dds readings were fine. She had her tonsils and adenoids wipped out the following week. She had never sufferred with tonsillitis prior and obviously never following. About a year later she swelled up and had another resp arrest-my brother had to ressusitate her (we are all medical )- she had anaphyactic shock following a peanut. looking back we had been out to eat and didnt know she was allergic so really i suppose she had her tonsils and ads out for nothing ! The docs just kept saying they had never seen such enormous tonsils and thay had blocked her air passage. Anyway - to reassure you dd was ok really following T & As
I booked a couple of weeks off work.
I was allowed to stay with her until they put her to sleep and insisted on being in recovery to be there when she woke up (i did know their staff tho )
I think we stayed in overnight and came home when she had had something to eat in the morning.
My best tip is to keep giving calpol and ibuprofen as prescribed regularly for the first week.
We literally wrote it down and set the alarm clock to give it in the night.
This will make her comfortable enough to manage some food-and eating gets rid of all the slough and debris in back of throat and thus aids healing.
Plently of fluids and ice cream too !
I know its prob not right but i managed to persuade my gp to give me a course of antibiotics prior to going in - if your dd gets tonsillitis that much it might be worth doing the same.
Pack a magazine or two for yourself too as i remember sitting for what seemed like hours while she slept the GA off.
I hope it goes well for you both- it obviously needs doing and she will be so much better afterwards.
(((((((((((hugs ))))))))))
