Why is my ankle swelling

Bit of a background. I went through a period of braking my bones quite often with very little effort. I had to attend regular dexa scans and advised to change my diet but I was discharged 3 years ago.

Yesterday I suffered terrible cramp in the night in my calf. Throughout the day my ankle became more and more painful, to the point that my ankle (where the bone is) became very swollen. This morning it was fine, however throughout the day today is gradually done the same again.

It's painful, but not agony so it doesn't warrant A&E...but should I be worried?

I would definitely get it checked out. Could be any number of things! Sprain? Hard to say. I had dvt which had similar symptoms. As your swelling subsided overnight, it may be nothing serious, but you don't know. I'm no doctor. Get it checked to be safe Smile.

I did google DVT but apparently they get hot 🤷‍♀️. I know we're not doctors on here (in the main) but as google always brings up the worse I thought I'd ask if anyone had any ideas. I'll book in with the GP tomorrow...well I'll try at least!

True! No harm in asking.

My leg wasn't hot, but I had bad cramps and it got very painful. I couldn't put weight on it eventually. When I first went to gp they measured both calves and compared. One was bigger than other, so maybe that would be worth checking.

Hopefully it's nothing serious and you can get an appointment soon to put your mind at rest.

This is it currently, it was completely normal this morning.

I'm a nurse and personally I'd go to a&e or a minor injuries unit with that, a GP will be no use as it needs an x ray or scan.

alwayscauseastir · 29/09/2019 20:49

@Girliefriendlikescake we do have a MIU locally but it isn't there when I wake up on a morning, only at night so I'd have to go armed with photos and I'd feel a bit of a fraud...although I am slightly worried now Hmm

Are you on any medication? Any other health problems?

alwayscauseastir · 29/09/2019 21:38

Not that I'm aware of Confused just B12 injections.

Just to update, I managed to see my GP today who has diagnosed it as "reactive arthritis", and I have to go for some blood tests on Wednesday. It's getting worse by the day, I couldn't get my boot on for work and I'm seriously considering hiring some crutches!
