A future without dairy?!

DS was sensitive to cow's milk in my diet whilst BF so I have gone a year without it. I was able to continue to eat cheese and yogurt during that time without causing him any distress. now that he is weaned I tried cow's milk again and had a horrible lactose intolerance reaction. Now it seems that cheese does something similar.

I'm so depressed...

I gave up dairy as part of a diet plan and now have funny reactions when I eat it.
Mind you Rice Dream is a fantastic milk alternative. Much nicer than nasty old soy stuff.
I do miss cheese.

Someone told me recently that it starts a vicious cycle when you have to cut it out for some reason, i.e. the less you take in then the less you can tolerate. I've tried the lactose pills beforehand but they don't seem to help at all. Did get some advice about probiotics so am going to try that and see what happens.

i have experienced that before abit woodstock . was vegetarian basically vegan for 10 years and only really started having more diary when i got pregnant and Swiss yogurt is pretty tasty.

Still i get headaches from too much cheese so watch myself with especially the stronger varieties.

I did the same with my ds, and now can only tolerate full fat ultra filtered milk with added calcium, vitA and vitD. Not sure why, but if you can get some it's worth a try. You can also buy lactose free milk.

You could just have a bit of a tummy bug, not enough to cause symptoms but too much to eat lactose. I would try some probiotics.

woodstock · 25/09/2004 13:03

I had considered that it might be a bug, but the symptoms have been coming on gradually for about 2 months with cheese. I had started taking those dairy digestive supplements beforehand and thought that was working. However, it was no help at all with the cow's milk. I had bloating quite soon afterwards with other even less pleasant symptoms to follow.
I have now lost a noticeable amount of weight this week from this and have decided to eliminate all dairy and gluten for a while to see what happens. Also started probiotics.

I don't eat much dairy by choice.

Alternatives to milk are - soya, rice, almond, and oat milk.

Rice and soya milk are available everywhere, particularly soya, look for Alpro. Personally I prefer rice milk, but in its sweetened form its got a lot of sugar in it. Oat milk is yummy on cereal.

I love soya yogurt, and its really healthy. Alpro make a dessert thats really nice as well, I forget the name off hand but it comes in chocolate, vanilla and caramel.

I like soya cheese spread, but soya hard cheese (cheesley) is not that nice.

I don't find a life with little dairy in it very hard at all, and I think its healthier. Pop along to Holland and Barratt and have a look and maybe try some dairy alternatives and see if anything works for you. Good luck!

I've been pretty much dairy free for about 2 years since ds1 also has a cow's milk intolerance and I'm currently bf ds2.

I'm another one that prefers rice milk to the soya alternatives. I'm wary of using too much soya as ds1 developed a sensitivity to soya a few months after we started using soya formula, soya cheese, soya yoghurts, soya ice cream etc as dairy replacements.

Are you sure it's lactose and not cow's milk protein that you're reacting to, and have you tried goat's milk instead? Also, agree that if it is a lactose intolerance, it may still be temporary. Perhaps those probiotics will sort you out after a while.

I hadn't thought that it might be the protein. And, no, hadn't tried goat's milk yet. Will try to get some tomorrow. My SIL used to raise goats and says it's really good.

goats milk can be abit special tasting... if you don´t like that maybe sheep milk which is rich, tastes good and does not have the strong flavour that goat products have
