Heart thumping in night

BoggiesBonnieBelle · 20/09/2019 11:04

Woke up last night with my heart thumping. Regular pulse but my heart was beating hard and I could hear my pulse in my ears. I think it lasted about 15 mins and I went back to sleep.

Slept in till 8 this morning - DH had already left for work, but that hadn't woken me. (Separate bedrooms, so he didn't know about the heart thumping).

I've had really bad diarrhoea this morning, and I feel washed out.

If the diarrhoea is a tummy bug, could that have caused the heart thumping?

I had a big meal last night, not sure if that's relevant.

I get this if I drink too much alcohol, esp prosecco and new world white wines. Could that be the cause?

BoggiesBonnieBelle · 20/09/2019 11:12

No, I had no alcohol at all last night. Just some sort of fizzy elderflower drink, not schloer, but that sort of drink.

Is it possible that both are caused by anxiety? Do you feel particularly stressed this morning?

lovemenorca · 20/09/2019 11:13

Are you underweight?

Smotheroffive · 20/09/2019 11:16

Sorry its worried you OP.

Maybe there was a loud noise in the vicinity and your body whilst you were asleep automatically and it woke you but you didn't realise what it was? Or a dream could do that?

Also, caffeine, any kind of overstimulation really during the previous day.

If you've never had it before, and it doesn't continue I'd probably discount it as anything significant.

But if you're worried you could do a follow up with your doc?

Starbonnet123 · 20/09/2019 11:17

I get that most nights 2 or 3 times but I've been told by my GP its probably a symptom of menopause .

BoggiesBonnieBelle · 20/09/2019 11:18

I'm not very stressed. My elderly father is unwell and waiting for test results, but that feels like normal stress, that everyone with parents in their 80s gets.

I'm overweight by quite a bit.

I get this and have been prescribed propranolol beta blockers to take when the anxiety strikes. My eldest daughter causes a lot of this with her disruptive behaviour and me thinking bout some of the things shes done causes my heart to race so I take a 40mg propranolol and it calms me

BoggiesBonnieBelle · 20/09/2019 11:23

I'm almost through the menopause; I'm 55 and last proper period was a year ago, but I'm still getting spotting. I think it's too late to get new menopause symptoms, but who knows?

Sounds like anxiety to me,I get this quite often.I caught my eldest daughter with cigarettes and even the thought of it makes my heart pound and race thinking did I over react by smacking her bottom to try to bring her to her senses. The Doctor prescribed beta blockers which slow my heart rate down which I take when it starts to beat too fast

Smotheroffive · 20/09/2019 11:43

If you are still getting spotting and never actually comoleted stopped your periods then you are not through the menopause.

The menopause is considered as a year without any bleed.

If you stopped, and have now started spotting go to your gp for a check up as this shouldn't be happening. It needs investigation.

The year thing is only wrt bleeding, the other symptoms can go on for many years.

Smotheroffive · 20/09/2019 11:44

Good god Susan you smacked your dds bum??? At how old??? Regardless of age, what is up with you?

Susan33 · 20/09/2019 11:46

I suffer from really fast heartbeat so was prescribed porpanolol beta blockers which slow the heartbeat down.I suffer from anxiety

ImNotYourGranny · 20/09/2019 11:49

I used to get this before finding out I had sleep apnea. Could it be that?

Span1elsRock · 20/09/2019 11:58

I've had this if I've had a big meal.

The worst was after a chinese and I had palpitations for a good 24 hours..... think it was a reaction to the MSG. I was sat up in bed at 4am with my heart absolutely pounding, it was very frightening. Not touched a takeaway since, it was that bad.

BoggiesBonnieBelle · 20/09/2019 13:05

I don't think it's anxiety.

I fell asleep and have just woken up again feeling a bit better. Definitely something wrong if I could fall back to sleep at 11.30 am after a full night's sleep, but I do feel less groggy now. Still not quite right.

Thanks for vall replies

I cooked the meal, so no MSG or hidden ingredients. There was coffee in the dessert, and I normally avoid caffeine after 6pm, but it was one shot of espresso in a dessert for four.

A heavy meal can definitely cause a pounding heart, especially if it was high carb. The digestive system then has to work overtime to digest, with an increased blood supply, which will make your heart beat harder.

A few years ago, I spent the weekend with a friend and we had a barbecue one evening, I ate more than I would normally, and that night I thought I was going to die! Heart was pounding out of my chest, felt clammy and sick, but it eased off the next morning.
