apicoectomy

Hi all
I had a root canal completed 2 years ago. Since jan this year the area that I had the root canal has been niggling away some days more painful than others. I went to see the dentist who referred me to the hospital (max fax) for an apicoectomy. The consultant at the hospital said it looks like my root canal is too short and to have it redone. So back to my dentist and the advice was yes can get the root canal redone but I have I a 20% chance of success. However if I have it redone on the Nhs I can be referred back to the hospital if further issues arise. Otherwise my other option is to be seen privately by an endodondist which will cost approx £500 which is a lot of money but it will address the root properly as I have nightly pain in my jaw as well ... confused what to do ... anyone have any similar experience to share. Is an apicoectomy an awful experience? Thank you in advance for any response.

Not sure what you want to know. I had an Apicoectomy about 10 years ago. It was not pleasant but no real problem afterwards using painkillers etc, although bruising was quite visible on jawline for a week or so. Longer term the tooth (mine is a front one) is quite discoloured but no further issues.

Well it's up to you really

If it needs retreatment you need it retreated rather than an apicectomy. Presumably maxfax aren't offering you an apicectomy before root treatmenr

Do you have £500?
Retreatment on the NHS is poor prognosis, and tbh its not normally offered, there's a much higher change of success when being done by a specialist. But if you dont have it or your tooth isn't worth that to you then don't

Its really a)how much you want to save the tooth
And b) how much money do you have/want to spend

If I were you, and I had the money I would go for specialist root treatment, but bear in mind it might end up costing a lot more as they will probably want to crown it afterwards, and they may charge additional money for consultations and x-rays etc

Hi thanks for your responses. I guess I am struggling to decide between paying £500 for the procedure or getting a root canal redone .... it is a lot of money to pay for the procedure ...
