Bowel cancer - a warning

I don't want to frighten anyone but this was a big wake-up this week.

Got a call from mum a week ago saying her DP was in hospital with bowel cancer.

He had major surgery that night, with an ileostomy bag fitted and many feet of insides removed.

We later heard his chances had only been 50/50.

He's doing remarkably well, considering.

Thing is - he'd had an all clear from a recent poo stick test. But he'd been constipated for a fortnight until, on a telephone doctor's advice unseen, he took laxatives. Worst thing he could have done, according to surgeon. When he was finally admitted in agony the A&E & surgeon started the process immediately.

The tumour was on the OUTSIDE of his intestine, gradually growing over a long time but showing no sign because it was not inside. It finally grew big enough to cause enough pressure to close & stop his intestine working.

So.

Pay attention to constipation and any other change in bowel habit (you know you).

Never accept a phone consultation. They need to see, hear, touch, even smell you.

Go to all the free health tests you're offered - but keep alert, even if you have a clear result.

Thanks for posting, I wish him a full recovery.

I know of 3 (younger) people who have / had bowel cancer. So important to raise awareness.

Borntobeamum · 16/09/2019 22:11

I had a colonoscopy when I got to 55. All was ok.
When I was 56 we moved house/doctors. They did a mini health check and the outcome was I had bowel cancer.
It’s a scary business x x

So sorry womanbornnotworn and thanks for posting.

Borntobeamum so sorry about your situation too. I was under the impression that a clear colonoscopy meant you were safe from bowel cancer for around 10 years, because polyps take a long time to grow and turn cancerous. Clearly this can’t be the case.

Poor guy. Glad the problem was caught in time. Do you know what test diagnoses a tumour like this?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 17/09/2019 19:05

My DH got to stage 4 bowel cancer with liver mets with no symptoms at all, he died in July nearly three years after his diagnosis's. It was picked up on an MRI for another issue.

This type of cancer seems to be on the increase. It petrifies me.

TheQueef · 17/09/2019 19:10

Very useful thread.
Flowers for you and DM hope he makes a speedy recovery.

WomanBornNotWorn · 22/09/2019 10:17

Thank you everyone, he's home!

To be clear - his tumour was on the outside of the intestine, so no traces of cancer on poo analysis or colonoscopy.

The physical pressure, like standing on a garden hose, was what stopped his normal digestion and passing through working.

It was the change in bowel habit - prolonged unusual constipation - that was the first sign.

We must be observant and insistent when something is not right for us.
