I've had hip and shoulder problems for a long time. the mornings are the worst and I think maybe a good mattress would help.

but I've just seen the prices of proper orthopedic ones and . but are they worth saving up?

We have got a mattress with a memory foam topping. I didnt like the ones that were fully memory foam when we tried it as I felt like I'd sink too deep to get out (plus I wasn't sure whether it would make 'night time fun' really tricky) I've got psoriatic arthritis and I do think its helped. dh doesnt complain of his shoulder hurting anymore either.

I think something with pocketed springs is just as good. Each spring is supposed to respond to contours of your body or something! I have a form of arthritis in my back and hip and have found the relyon beds very good. HTH

I don't know about orthopadic mattresses, but I have latex mattresses and they are excellent. Very expensive, but worth every penny IMO. I think - but not sure - that they are cheaper than top of the range ortho mattresses. They don't need to be turned, and you cannot feel your partner's movement in the bed unless the bedframe moves as well.

I have chronic back trouble (BTW I find that if mornings are worst it means that I'm having a flair-up for whatever reason and need to get myself to the physio or osteo ASAP) and the latex mattresses are definitely better for me than any sprung mattresses that I've slept on.

The bed base will make a difference, so, what ever mattress you want to try, get the shop assistant to put it on a bed with the same bed base as yours.

thanks - maybe I should go to a bed shop then. was originally thinking about buying one online, but that was before I saw the prices.

It's my fat hips and inability to sleep on anything but my side that's the problem I think. that and the baby flinging.

definitely go to a bed shop. what looks comfy on the screen won't necessarily suit you. We have a fab one near here that delivered later that afternoon we bought it.

SenoraPostrophe · 10/08/2007 21:01

can you get ones that are soft on one side (for me) and hard on the other? (for dh)

I think you can with sprung mattresses. I've seen ones which zip together. I don't know what the minimum size would be, but I imagine they would work better with larger beds - I can't imagine a 4'6" bed being comfortable with two zones, as each zone would be only just over 2' wide and so probably too narrow for comfort, especially if you sleep on your side.

OK, I gotta ask: what's baby flinging?

My back problems (hip and shoulder) disappeared over night when we invested in a proper orthopedic mattress.
Best money EVER spent.
When our bed was in storage for 3 months and we were on a borrowed mattress all the pain came back ....

ghosty · 11/08/2007 06:42

We spent an amusing afternoon 'bedhopping' in a big bed store to find the right one ...

Tempur ( ?sp) is the mattress to get for back problems apparently. My BIL has horrendous back problems and has found this mattress to be transformational.

mears · 11/08/2007 07:10

Tempur

SenoraPostrophe · 12/08/2007 20:11

thanks Mears - I had been looking at Tempur (then stopped when I saw the prices). will have to talk to dh...

prettycandles - sorry, I mean that sort of throwing of babies onto hips that people (well I) do a lot when other children are about or when the baby is a bit whingy!

Oh do seriously consider Tempur. They are truly wonderful. I've even brought a single one up to my parents this week, as I couldn't bear to sleep on their ordinary mattress for a whole week now that I'm spoiled with Tempur!

SenoraPostrophe · 14/08/2007 20:17

ok. will have an "you bought the audi now I get something" chat with dh. are the overlays any good or do you have to go the whole hog?

I haven't tried the overlays, so can't really comment on those, but the whole mattresses are heaven!
