what is foot drop ?

My Nan , bless her had a suspected mini stroke yesterday evening, and is currently in hospital having various tests, she couldn't move one of her legs, and they told her that it was foot drop, I have never heard of this - does anyone know what it is or any information around it ?

Hi there, sorry to hear about your Nan. Foot drop is an abnormality in the way you walk, because weakness or nerve damage stops part of the foot moving normally. It usually means that people either drag their affected foot, or lift their leg at the thigh to stop it dragging. Either can make them at greater risk of falling. The NHS has an easy to understand page with a lot more information on it.

The good news is, it may not be permanent. And even if it is, there are things your Nan can do to improve things, such as wearing a splint, and maybe physio. Before she is discharged from the hospital, make sure she is assessed by physiotherapy and occupational therapy. They may want to assess her home environment to check it is safe for her and that she has enough help until she gets better.

Can recommend Boxia foot braces or Foot ups for dropped foot. They may be available on NHS but don't hold your breath! Not cheap but they do work. Speak to your physio.
