DS has 2nd degree burn on hand

Poor DS dropped his apple and it rolled under the car. When he tried to pick it up, he put his hand out to steady himself and held onto the exhaust.

I cooled it and since it was bleeding and looked really bad, took him straight to the Dr. Doc said that he had 2nd degree burn and put some ointment on it and a bandage. He has to keep the bandage on until tomorrow then we will see what it is like. Doc said he might have a scar.

It is on the palm of his right hand, at the base of his fingers so it is not as if it would be disfiguring but I wondered if anyone had any advice. And is there anything else I should do when the bandage comes off?

He doesn't seem to be in pain thankfully. I think that I was almost more upset.

Ouch

DH swears by honey (preferably Manuka) for healing burns.

Seems to work for him, but I've no idea if there's any scientific basis in it!

Lots of fluids! sounds mad- but you lose so much water through burns- helps the skin heal also.

EffiePerine · 09/08/2007 14:22

DON'T put honey/oil or anything on it! Really, don't. Burns need to be kept clean.

You did the right thing by cooling his hand and going to the gp .

Oh, and I mean applying it to the skin, not eating it

Oops - sorry macmama and Effie. Ignore what I said then

Don't put anything on it at all! Burns can very easily get infected.

My daughter had a bad burn on her hand when she was 2 which eventually needed a skin graft.

The problems are with healing, the skin can heal tightly which is what happened to dd and is why she needed the graft.

Once it has healed make sure he uses his hand a lot, things like playing with playdough and swimming are excellent, to keep the skin loose and avoid kelloid scarring.Anything that maks them open and close his hands.

My DD 9 has got a scar on the back of her hand which she for the first time yesterday said people noticed , however as she gets older adn her hand grows it will fade even more.

My friend's ds had a burn on the palm of his hand, he was given phyio exercises to stretch the skin, she said they were doing 'twinkle twinkle' a lot, getting him to make star shapes stretching his hands really wide.

Thanks for all the tips. He seems to be alright, we will see when the bandage comes off tomorrow.

Will get the playdough out!

That is good to hear Ruby. Hopefully DS's hand will heal well.
